2 Hotels Calling Pest Control to Address Cockroach Infestation After a SHN Person Complained on FB

When checking into a 5-star hotel, there are some things you expect to have:

  • a luxurious room
  • a mattress as soft as the clouds
  • excellent service
  • zero cockroaches

But, as some Singaporeans who recently purchased flight tickets to Hong Kong will tell you, you can’t always get what you want in life.

2 Hotels Calling Pest Control to Address Cockroach Infestation After a SHN Person Complained on FB

Two 5-star hotels have called in pest control to tackle a cockroach infestation that their guests have complained about.

Guests who were serving stay-home notices at the Grand Copthorne Waterfront and Swissotel The Stamford had shared photos of the roaches on Facebook, appalling netizens.

Speaking to TODAYonline a spokesperson for Grand Copthorne Waterfront said the hotel is taking the complaints seriously.

“Our hotels maintain a strict cleaning regime that adheres to the necessary stay-home notice protocols of disinfecting and cleaning. Grand Copthorne Waterfront has engaged a pest control specialist to conduct a thorough check and fumigation of the premises”

The hotel is also increasing the frequency of its cleaning procedures for all rooms, including a thorough disinfection of hard-to-reach areas.

Similarly, a representative from Swissotel The Stamford said that “certified specialists” had been called in immediately, once they were notified of the problem.

Cockroaches Caused Allergic Reaction

The hullabaloo started on 25 Nov, when a 28-year-old woman complained about her roach-infested room on Facebook.

The woman, presumably after travelling, had been placed in a room at the Grand Copthorne Waterfront, an upscale hotel.

However, she found that the hotel was a little too popular, as she woke up one day to find some unwanted guests in her room.

“I woke up and that’s when I saw roaches on the table, the wall, on the bed and on the floor as well. A total of five that I was able to see. And then I started developing allergies to it. I was just itching a lot and scratching a lot.”

Suspecting that these little critters were all over the hotel, she made a request to be transferred to a different hotel.

She called the hotline for stay-home notice guests, but was told that that her request could take five to seven business days to process.

She was then transferred to another room, and asked hotel employees to spray insecticide throughout the room before she entered.

Surely this room would be cockroach free, right?

Nope.

When she complained to the hotel, they sent someone to vacuum-clean the room, and said that they didn’t see any roaches.

After notifying the authorities, including the Ministry of Health, Singapore Tourism Board, and Immigration and Checkpoints Authority, she was finally transferred to Swissotel The Stamford.

Found Cockroaches in Four Different Rooms

Another woman who stayed at the same hotel found cockroaches in four different rooms.

The woman also shared pictures of the roaches on Facebook.

According to the woman’s post, she flew in from Japan and checked into the Grand Copthorne Waterfront Hotel on 24 Nov to serve her stay-home notice.

At around 4am, she discovered she was not alone in the hotel.

It wasn’t a serial killer or anything. It was much worse: she saw a small cockroach on her table, and spotted two more beside the table.

She killed the cockroaches and requested for a change of rooms, which was granted immediately.

Problem solved, right?

Except that the second room had a cockroach as well. So, she complained once again, but this time, they responded by leaving a can of Baygon at her door.

With such excellent and swift service, you can see why they’re a 5-star hotel.

She called the SHN hotline, but they simply apologised and said nothing could be done.

So, she was moved to a third room. This time, the hotel made sure to inspect the room for cockroaches and spray it with Baygon before she moved in.

She entered the room and managed to sleep, even though it seemed like there was more Baygon than oxygen in the air, but the next day, she found three more cockroaches.

This time, she decided to take photos as evidence.

She complained to the hotel once again and was told that she’d get a new room, one that pest control had inspected and worked on.

So, there’s no conceivable way that it would have a cockroach right?

Nope.

I mean, yes there is.

Surprise, surprise, after moving to her fourth room, she found a cockroach chilling on the bathroom wall.

After complaining for what seemed liked the 46th time, reception called her again and offered her a room that they claimed was more spacious and well lit, because everyone knows how much cockroaches hate that.

She’s not found any cockroaches so far, but she sleeps with the light on, as most of us would do.
