If you think that hearing your neighbour’s (slightly loud) KTV singing at 9 pm’s the definition of having a neighbour from hell, you haven’t seen what a true neighbour from hell looks like.
But it seems like this man and his family living in Hougang do, for his neighbour’s actions over the past few years have seemed… hostile, to say the very least.
I mean, how else would you describe a neighbour that throws leftover food in front of your unit and puts brooms and underwear in front of their own house to curse you?
The alleged victim, a 41-year-old named Patrick, recently sat down with Shin Min Daily News to speak about his experience.
Neighbour Started Throwing Leftover Food In Front of Their Door and Splashed Dirty Water
When speaking to Shin Min, Patrick revealed that he and his family moved into their current Housing Development Board (HDB) unit on the 13th storey of Block 707 Hougang Ave 2 in 2016.
However, shortly after moving in, the neighbour living in the opposite unit started to “make life difficult” for them.
According to Patrick, the unit opposite his family’s is occupied by a couple in their 60s and their three children.
He added that the neighbour who has been creating trouble for them is the mother of the family.
He recalled how she first started throwing leftover food and chicken bones in front of his unit.
She even splashed dirty water there.
When Patrick confronted her about why she did that, she claimed that the leftover food was left there by birds.
Police Report Was Filed After Neighbour Started Stealing Their Shoes, Relationship Soured More After That
After some time, Patrick started to notice that his family’s shoes were starting to go missing.
In particular, the neighbour would take one shoe per pair and apparently throw their shoes down the block.
Once, Patrick caught her red-handed and decided to call the police.
After that incident, the relationship between both families soured even more.
Patrick also claimed that the neighbour became even more inconsiderate and would hurl expletives whenever she saw his mother praying outside the house.
Based on Patrick’s recount, even his foreign domestic helper would get scolded by the neighbour for no reason.
Neighbour Started Putting Multiple Brooms, Underwear and Mirrors to “Curse” Him and His Family
And that’s not all.
The neighbour put six or seven brooms outside her unit and hung many pairs of underwear and mirrors on them.
After seeing this, Patrick consulted his Chinese friends to ask what it meant.
He then learned that his neighbour might have been trying to create a set-up to “curse” him and make him unlucky.
When Shin Min reporters walked past the outside of the neighbour’s unit, they noticed at least six brooms outside the unit and along the corridor.
Around a dozen pairs of women’s underwear were hung up as well; some were hung on the broom, and others were hung along the railings of the staircase near the corridor.
Additionally, Patrick shared that he found an “unknown liquid” that appeared to be saliva on the lift buttons on multiple occasions.
He mentioned how he believes that the person behind this inconsiderate act is his neighbour as well.
Hence, he now takes the stairs down before taking the lift.
Does Not Know Why Neighbour Targeted His Family
Apart from the acts themselves, Patrick pointed out that he does not know why the neighbour chose to target him and his family.
He also revealed that the police have been called many times to help mediate the conflicts that both families get into.
Both families have also been called to court for mediation, but nothing has been able to solve their disputes.
Patrick said that his neighbour refused to attend the mediation sessions, leaving Patrick with no choice but to put up with her behaviour as he did not want to hire a lawyer to sue her.
He then expressed his hopes that his neighbour will leave him and his family alone so everyone can coexist peacefully.
Neighbour’s Son Claimed That He’s a Victim Too
Patrick also disclosed that he once tried to find the neighbour’s son to try and mediate the situation.
However, the neighbour’s son said that he would not interfere with the situation and claimed that he was a victim too.
He also mentioned that he has plans to move out in the future.
When Shin Min reporters visited the neighbour’s unit on Sunday (18 June) night, the neighbour’s son had just reached home.
He declined to be interviewed and said that he was a victim as well.
Shin Min reporters visited the unit again on Monday (19 June) morning, but no one answered the door during their second visit.
