The Food & Beverage (F&B) industry in Singapore is a brutal and highly competitive field. New restaurants come and go here all the time. However, there are some that we remember fondly of. Here are some of the restaurants in Singapore from the 60s to the 90s. If you have eaten in them before, you’re old AF.
A&W
The fast food restaurant the every kid of the 90s wants to bring back. Many childhood memories and family time were spent over a mug of root beer float and curly fries. The American fast food chain set up here in 1966, way before McDonald’s and KFC. It exited in 2003 due to slow sales and tough competition from other fast food restaurants.
Taco Bell
A fast food Mexican restaurant that shared space with KFC. Their most famous outlet was at Funan Digital Life Mall before they left for good in 2008. Known for their tacos and burritos, their decline was due to the fact that tex-mex food did not really take off with Singaporeans. It was also facing tough competition from the increasing popularity of other fast food chains such as McDonald’s.
Ponderosa
A western food restaurant that is most fondly known for its unlimited salad bar with any purchase of a main course, its outlet was situated at the old Plaza Singapura. The soft serve ice cream station was extremely popular with children.
Denny’s
Bet you didn’t know that Singapore used to have three Denny’s outlets. They were at Orchard Towers, Holland Village and Marina Mandarin. Denny’s is an all-American casual diner serving breakfast, lunch, dinner and desserts around the clock. They are famous for being opened 24/7, even on public holidays. They made as quiet an entrance as their exit.
Chuck E Cheese
An old school American fast food restaurant and entertainment centre at Parkway Parade that was a popular spot for many people in the 80s. Children loved burning off energy at the Fantasy Playland after eating their fast food.
