By now, you’ll surely have heard of the whole Huawei commotion, and how an elderly woman actually fainted from the turmoil of it all.
You can read about that here.
But if you haven’t heard anything about it, here’s a quick recap:

Earlier on, Huawei had marketed their Huawei Y6 Pro at a heavily discounted S$54, and massive crowds had turned up at Huawei stores islandwide across Singapore, each hoping to invest small and win big.
But things soon got complicated when it turned out that there were too little stocks available. Nostrils flaring, verbal dissent soon issued throughout each of the outlets.
OMG a bunch of people are arguing w courts staff its fucking intense FOR A $54 PHONE pic.twitter.com/x9wCKXh2CR

In fact, the situation got so bad that the police needed to be brought in, and Huawei’s Tampines Mall outlet had to be closed due to security reasons.
And while I’m hardly the most knowledgeable on the matter, one thing’s for sure:
Huawei sure bit off more than it could chew with this NDP-inspired promotion of theirs.
Huawei Asking For Second Chance With $598 Mate 20 Pro Promo From 27 Jul
It’s bad enough to ‘sin’ and make amends. It’s even worse to ‘sin’ and not do anything about it.
Thankfully, it seems that Huawei’s going with the former here.

To ‘thank’ members of the public for the “unprecedented surge of demand”, as well as to continue the National Day festivities, Huawei has disclosed another promotion:
From 27 July onwards, customers will be able to procure the Mate 20 for just S$568, at all Challenger stores islandwide.
Lest you’re unaware, that’s a clean $430 off the original price. The initial retail price of the phone was S$998.
According to Mothership, midnight blue and black models will be available, although it’s unclear how many sets will be up for grabs. Huawei has used the term “limited quantities” in this case, which is a pretty smart move considering the sheer chaos that erupted before.
The Mate 20 Pro, however, is not included in the promotion.

“Put on hold”
The promotion, however, has reportedly been “put on hold” until further notice.
According to Mothership, a Huawei spokesperson has informed them that the Mate 20 promotion is currently “put on hold” until further notice.
Here’s their statement:
“We are deeply regretful for an outcome that went against our intentions of providing a celebratory promotion. Due to an overwhelming response, we are assessing other possibilities to address the situation and will continue to offer attractive promotions for all.”
And so… now what?
Before you lambast Huawei for another promotional gimmick ‘gone wrong’, you might want to keep in mind that they’re at the very least, trying to really clarify everything before they launch it. After all…

Just look at their previous promotion.
Doubt they’ll want a repeat incident here, to be honest.
Nevertheless, we’ll be sure to update this article if there’re any further changes. Until then, sit tight…
And enjoy the weekend. 🙂
