Singapore seems to be unable to catch its breath, especially when it comes to our public transport like our MRT, with continuous, non-stop developments.
In November 2024, the Land Transport Authority (LTA) announced that passengers can look forward to newer, bigger trains with open spaces and larger windows on the North-South and East-West lines, rolling out progressively over the next three years until the end of 2026.
Now, Singaporeans who frequent the Blue Downtown Line have something better to anticipate.
The new Hume MRT station on the Downtown Line (DTL) will open ahead of schedule on 28 February 2025.
Located along Upper Bukit Timah Road, the Hume station sits between Hillview and Beauty World stations. It was initially set to open in the second quarter of the year.
Passenger service is set to commence at 3pm on 28 February 2025.
Once operational, it will be more convenient for residents to travel to the city centre, Mr Chee Hong Tat noted in a Facebook post.
Travel Time to Downtown Station Reduced By 15 Minutes
Typically, traveling from Hume station to Downtown station will take around 30 minutes, down from about 45 minutes previously.
Fifteen minutes can make a significant difference, especially if you are running late for work and your office is conveniently located in town.
Nearby residents will also benefit from a 15-minute ride on the MRT to Botanic Gardens interchange. Normally, a bus ride for the same distance can take twice as long.
Mr Chee also highlighted improved accessibility for commuters visiting attractions like the Former Ford Factory and the Rail Corridor.
To enhance the commuting experience, Hume MRT station will feature sheltered walkways connecting the station to nearby bus stops and designated pick-up/drop-off points.
The Land Transport Authority (LTA) confirmed that the station box for Hume was completed during the second phase of the Downtown Line (DTL).
Hume Station Will Have Two Entrances
Hume station will have two entrances: one facing Upper Bukit Timah Road and the other facing Hume Avenue.
The station has achieved BCA Green Mark Gold certification for its environmentally friendly design, which includes a rooftop fitted with solar panels, energy-efficient lighting systems, and a hybrid cooling solution.
Upon its completion, the DTL will have 35 operational stations, further enhancing Singapore’s transport infrastructure.
Mr Chee added that the opening of Hume station is a significant step towards achieving the government’s vision of having eight in ten households within a ten-minute walk of a train station by the 2030s.
Extensions to connect the DTL with the Thomson-East Coast Line and the North-South Line are under construction, and scheduled for completion in the second half of 2026 and in 2035 respectively.
LTA’s Jurong Region Line Still Underway
While Downtown Line commuters have much to celebrate, residents in the west can look forward to the completion of the Jurong Region Line (JRL), which is set to open in phases between 2027 and 2029.
The JRL is expected to significantly boost connectivity within the Jurong region and support its transformation into Singapore’s largest commercial hub outside the Central Business District.
It will seamlessly connect key activity hubs, such as the Jurong Industrial Estate, the Jurong Innovation District, and Nanyang Technological University (NTU).
For future NTU students, the JRL will offer a more convenient route to campus, eliminating the need for the current journey, which involves travelling to the nearest MRT stations — either Pioneer or Boon Lay — followed by a bus ride on route 179.
Once completed, the JRL will place an additional 60,000 households in Jurong within a ten-minute walk of a train station, making public transport more accessible than ever.
