The father of the 15-year-old girl sexually abused by former Mediacorp actor Ian Fang has expressed profound anger and dissatisfaction with the 40-month jail sentence handed down to the 35-year-old, calling it inadequate punishment for crimes that have “marked my daughter for life.”

A Father’s Rage

In emotional interviews following Fang’s sentencing in May 2025, the victim’s father didn’t mince words about his feelings toward the man who betrayed his family’s trust.

“I wish I could be in the same cell as him, so I can wake up every day and I see his face, I make sure he doesn’t wake up,” he told reporters, calling Fang a “devil” and expressing he “wouldn’t mind doing jail time” just to have the opportunity to confront his daughter’s abuser daily.

The father’s anger stems not just from the sexual abuse itself, but from the calculated manipulation Fang employed.

“He abused his power as a teacher and took advantage of the girl, who was infatuated with him because he was a celebrity,” the father explained, describing how Fang used his fame and age to manipulate his vulnerable teenage daughter.

The Betrayal of Trust

What makes the case particularly painful for the family is that Fang wasn’t a stranger – he was someone they considered a friend.

The former actor had struck up a friendship with the girl’s parents after meeting her and her mother at an event, with the family treating him to dinners and developing what they believed was a genuine friendship.

“We had drinks with him and everything. He called me ‘bro’ and this and that. And then behind my back, he’s having sex with my daughter,” the father recounted.

The deception was so complete that Fang would ask the girl to “play along” when around her parents, maintaining the facade of normalcy.

“He would meet us and act like nothing has happened,” the father said. “We didn’t know at all. He played his acting role so well. Really give him an Oscar for that.”

The Discovery and Aftermath

The sexual encounters only came to light when the teenager sought treatment for a sexually transmitted infection she contracted from Fang. Even then, she was reluctant to reveal the truth to her parents.

“What my wife had to do was basically tell her: ‘Okay, you need to tell us who did this to you, because if you don’t tell us, I’m not going to pay for your medical fees,'” the father revealed.

When the father first learned of Fang’s identity as the perpetrator in August 2024, his immediate reaction was violent.

“I know where this guy stays… You want to take action on your own when this kind of things happen to your family,” he said, admitting his first instinct was to “storm over to the ex-actor’s house and make him disappear from this world forever.”

Only intervention from his wife prevented him from acting on these impulses.

The family’s anger was further inflamed by Fang’s behavior after being instructed by police not to contact the victim. Despite clear orders, he persisted in harassing the girl with late-night phone calls.

“Every single day, by the time it hits around midnight to 2am, that was a crucial timing. The phone never stops,” the father recalled. When one number was blocked, Fang would call from another, sometimes playing love songs or crying over the phone.

Lasting Impact on the Victim

The abuse has left profound and lasting effects on the teenage victim. She was diagnosed with adjustment disorder with depressed mood and was hospitalized at the Institute of Mental Health for nearly a week in August 2024.

In her victim impact statement, she described feeling dependent on Fang and believing “the only way to keep him close to her was through sex.”

The trauma has affected multiple aspects of her life, including her gender expression, and has left her fearful of middle-aged men and distrustful of relationships.

“She’s getting better, definitely, but it takes time,” her father said. “There’s always that 10 percent back in her head, no matter what she does, she will think of this. She will be traumatized for the rest of her life.”

Demands for Greater Punishment

The family is deeply dissatisfied with Fang’s 40-month sentence, particularly the absence of caning. “Mark him for life. He marked my daughter for life,” the father demanded. “Let the guy learn. Like that, every time he takes off his clothes, people can see… he did something bad in the past.”

When his daughter heard the sentence, she asked her mother: “Why was the sentence so light? What if he comes back to harass or take revenge on me after he’s released?” The family considers the punishment “unacceptable” and insufficient for the crimes committed.

Civil Action and Moving Forward

Unsatisfied with the criminal proceedings, the family has announced plans to pursue civil action against Fang. Their lawyer, Richard Siaw, confirmed he has been instructed to commence civil proceedings for the harms inflicted on the victim, seeking redress beyond the criminal sentence.

However, the father emphasized that money isn’t the motivation. “I will never touch a single cent from him. Everything will be donated to a charity,” he said. “But I want to make this guy learn his lesson, and why we sue him is because there is no rotan [caning].”

The family has also decided to send their daughter abroad to study, hoping she can start anew away from the trauma and memories associated with Singapore.

A Family Forever Changed

The ordeal has fundamentally altered the family dynamic. Parents who once gave their daughter “100 percent trust” now monitor her whereabouts using tracking apps, and the close-knit family has had to grapple with the lies and secrecy that allowed the abuse to continue.

“We always gave our full 100 percent trust to her. So we didn’t know that that’s how she went out with him,” the father explained. “We are trying our best to make her happy again.”
