Iceberg lettuces are amazing to work with. They’re easy to clean and can be eaten raw or cooked.
And they’re considered somewhat healthy too.
But here’s the thing, if you’ve bought any iceberg lettuces from Sheng Siong or NTUC Fairprice recently, you might not want to eat them.

AVA Issues Recall For Pasar Iceberg Lettuces in S’pore
On 4 October 2018, the Agri-Food and Veterinary Authority (AVA) issued a recall for iceberg lettuce sold at Fairprice and Sheng Siong.
According to them, tests carried out on iceberg lettuce from a Malaysian farm revealed that it has “high levels of fipronil”, which is a wide-spectrum pesticide.
Go Fresh Impex is tasked with recalling the products.
For those who’ve bought the products, you are advised not to eat it (duh).
Instead, you should contact the respective supermarkets.
If you’ve purchased the Pasar iceberg lettuce from Fairprice, check for the supplier code. Affected lettuce at Fairprice comes with the supplier code 40.
Sheng Siong said that they have removed the affected products from their shelves and sourced iceberg lettuce from another supplier.
For people who had purchased affected lettuce from Sheng Siong, you can bring the lettuce with proof of purchase back to any outlets for a full refund.
Also, please remember to wash and soak any vegetables before cooking to get rid of chemicals on the plants.

AVA recalls Guang Li Bottled Drinking Water
On 8 Sep, the AVA said that they’ve detected Pseudomonas aeruginosa bacteria in a batch of Guang Li Liang bottled drinking water.
The bacteria, AVA said, can be found in sewage and faeces.
It was added that the bacteria, while having the capability to cause a range of infections, rarely caused illness in healthy individuals.
Tiong Lian Food Pte Ltd Frozen-Thawed Minced Meat
On 4 Sep, Facebook user, Candy Chan, took to the social media platform about her experience. She found clear plastic within the first pack of the meat. When she sent her helper back to the supermarket to get another packet of the meat, she found the same thing.
Giant has responded and said they’ve immediately removed the product from their shelves. In addition, the manufacturer apologised and said that the plastic ended up in the meat by accident, and the mistake was subsequently missed in the quality control stage by their staff.

Mamil Gold Infant Formula Stage 1 from Dumex
Just a day after PM Lee’s National Day Rally speech, the Mamil Gold Infant Formula Stage 1 from Dumex were recalled on 20 Aug.
They’ve detected Cronobacter sakazakii bacteria in the milk powder.
While Cronobacter infections are rare, they can be dangerous to newborn infants. If contracted, 50% of the infants will die and those who survive will have neurological impairment.
AVA says that symptoms of meningitis or sepsis include poor feeding, fever or lethargy.
Dumex assures all parents that the other stages of their milk formula are all safe for consumption.
