Man Posted Sister’s IMH Medical Info on Social Media & Stole Grocery Vouchers Coz’ She Owed Him $150

All families have their squabbles.

It’s impossible to live with other people in a flat for decades and not get sick of them and get irked by their eccentric habits.

But when you steal your sister’s grocery vouchers and threaten to slash your mother with a parang, you know you’ve gone too far.

Man Posted Sister’s IMH Medical Info on Social Media & Stole Grocery Vouchers Coz’ She Owed Him $150

The troubled brother and son in question is 36-year-old man Syahrel Mohamad.

Upset that his sister still owed him S$150, Syahrel did some rather ill-advised things.

On 18 Dec last year, he broke open his sister’s letterbox and stole grocery vouchers that were given out to help Singaporeans who were less well-off during the COVID-19 pandemic.

The vouchers were worth S$100 in total.

Syahrel gave S$30 of the stolen vouchers to his fiancee, who didn’t know they were stolen. As for the rest, he gave them to random people in the Bukit Panjang area.

Hello there, would you like a free grocery voucher that I definitely did not steal?

But that wasn’t all Syahrel did.

When he returned to his sister’s letterbox the next day to steal even more items, he found his sister’s bill from the Institute of Mental Health (IMH).

While mental health issues are slowly shedding the stigma they once carried, people still, understandably, want to keep such issues to themselves.

But out of vengeance, Syahrel posted the information on his public Instagram account with the caption “gile rupe nye… hahahahaha” meaning “this person is crazy”.

His sister was being treated at IMH for depression at the time.

His offences came to light when his sister realised that her vouchers were stolen and lodged a police report over the theft.

Threatened to Slash Mother With Parang Because She Owed Money

Syahrel also had a problem with his mother, who was a widow, for the same reason.

Furious that she hadn’t yet returned the S$500 he had given her, Syharely sent messages last November threatening to slash her head with a parang.

He also threatened to send people up to her unit and splash paint at the flat.

Just to be clear, this was his widowed mother whom he was threatening.

Syahrel, who was the oldest of five children, had an issue with another sister’s family member as well.

They didn’t return the S$510 he had given them to invest in cryptocurrency, so he threatened to hurt them.

I feel like this guy should get out of the money-lending business.

Sentenced to 8 Months Jail

For his various offences, Syahrel was handed a long list of charges, including:

  • intentionally causing distress
  • criminal intimidation
  • committing a rash act to endanger human life
  • voluntarily causing hurt
  • theft
  • failing to report for bail

He pleaded guilty to seven charges in total and was sentenced to eight months and 12 weeks’ jail. He was also fined S$2,500.

Another unrelated incident for which he was prosecuted as well involved an argument with an e-bike rider.

Angered by their dispute, Syahrel locked the front wheel of the man’s bike with a padlock.

As a result, the rider fell to the ground and injured his leg later while trying to ride his bike.
