Kit Kat is many things: delicious, irresistible, beautiful to behold, etc. etc.

But did you know that these chocolate wafers are also…

Good luck charms?

Or at least in Japan anyway. Though once you know it, you might just smuggle one into the exam hall too!

Japan’s obsession

Lest you’re unaware, Japan’s obsessed with Kit Kats. And that’s an understatement, seeing how Japan consumes up to 5 million Kit Kats per day.

But here’s the thing; it’s not just the taste that got the Japanese so hooked onto these chocolatey wafers.

It’s because in Japan, Kit Kats are perceived as good luck charms.

See, Kit Kat sounds a lot like the the Japanese phrase Kitto Katsu, which means ‘you will surely win’ in Japanese!

As a result, they have become must-have good luck charms for students taking entrance exams, with 1 in 3 students getting a Kit Kat before a test, and 1 in 5 bringing it into the exam hall!

And it’s not only for exams either. Kit Kats have been gifted as good luck charms for pretty much everything.

Which also effectively led Kit Kat to team up with the postal service to launch Kit Kat Mail

A service whereby you can send good luck to whomever you wish!

Japan-exclusive flavours

Incidentally, there have been over 300 unique Kit Kat flavours sold in Japan, with…

And even Sake

Included amongst the mix!

Well, if you think about it, the average Japanese student would get loads of kit kats in his/her studying career.

So an abundance of flavours is pretty much a genius tactic on Kit Kat’s part.

Good luck charms, anyone?

While the chocolate wafers hold special importance in the hearts of the Japanese, Kit Kat is pretty much still a solitary savoury snack for the Singaporeans.

BUT, if you happen to be interested in Japanese culture and have run out of ideas for that exclusive exam luck…

Why not consider a Kitto Katsu?

I mean; if it doesn’t work, you can still eat it. 😉 #winwinsituation
