I often hear people say this:
“You can get new friends. You can get a new job. But you can’t get a new family. So cherish them while you can, because they’re all you have.”
Yet, despite the seemingly obvious truth in the aforementioned statement, I can’t help but wonder:
Are familial ties truly as beautiful as the world likes to paint them, or are they just like a magician’s tricks…
An illusion?
If you’re wondering why I’m being so un-un-characteristically negative here, it’s because over in India, a political candidate actually cried upon hearing his ongoing vote count. And the reason?
He received only 5 votes, despite having 9 family members.
What happened?
Just last week, India saw its general election to a close, with India’s Prime Minister Narendra Modi being declared as the victor after being re-elected for a second term.
The election, which took place from 11 to 19 May 2019, happened in seven phases and involved some 600 million voters. Lest you’re unaware, that’s a lot.
While votes were being counted last Thursday (23 May), however, a video of one election candidate in the state of Punjabi began circulating online.
In the video, independent candidate Neetu Shutteran Wala can be seen crying while being interviewed by a journalist, after having reportedly received just five votes.
And according to India Today, he told the journalist this while tearing up:
“Sir, despite having nine members in (my) family, I got only five votes.”

More than meets the eye?
While it was definitely no happy occasion, especially for the Indian candidate in question, it seems that there’s more than meets the eye. According to India’s election commission website, it was later revealed that the interview took place while the votes were still being counted, and Neetu Shutteran Wala actually garnered 856 votes in the final tally.
He reportedly received 0.08% of votes in his constituency.

Sure, he didn’t win, but hey;
At the very least, you can be sure that his family members didn’t actually give up on him.
Or perhaps they actually did give up on him. Who knows?
JUST KIDDING.
Netizens react
In case you’re wondering about how the Netizens in this case reacted…

Well, look for yourself.
Though truth be told; I couldn’t help but laugh the first time I saw it too. And honestly…
Didn’t you do the same too?
Brb, going to hell.
