The majority of my day is spent pondering on the question, “But why would they do that?”
The remaining hours of my day are then spent drafting yet another speech that I will never get to recite. It might come in handy for… I don’t know. A United Nations conference?
Very much like me, every female in the world deserves the right to dream. To the many of us, our ambitions are catapults to brighter days. But not all of us are gifted with the opportunity to do so.
Many become victims of injustice and malicious crimes.
A 23-year-old rape victim from India has died after being set on fire by a gang of men. One of the men involved in the crime was the victim’s rapist.
Woman Had Been On Her Way To Court Hearing
According to Reuters, the 23-year-old unnamed victim had been on her way to attend a court hearing on her rape case on Thursday, 5 December 2019.
She was about to board a train in the Unnao district of Northern Uttar Pradesh when the attack took place. The victim had been doused with kerosene and set on fire, according to the police.
She was airlifted to Delhi for treatment. Unfortunately, she succumbed to her injuries that Friday.
Dr Shalabh Kumar from New Delhi’s Safdarjung Hospital told Reuters that the victim had died because of a cardiac arrest. Her windpipe had been burnt and her lungs were filled with toxic and hot fumes.
“She was having 95% burns,” said Dr Kumar.
Rapist Had Been Jailed Prior to Incident
The victim was known to have filed a complaint against her perpetrator with the Unnao police in March. Documents from the police showed that the 23-year-old had been raped at gunpoint on 12 December 2018.
Before the incident, her rapist had been in jail. Reports suggest that he had been released on bail the week before.
The victim’s father told the media that their family had suffered from being harassed and threatened by the rapist’s family.
“They should be either hanged or shot dead,” he told the India Today news channel.
Second Major Case of Violence Against Women
This case is accounted to be the second major case of violence against women in the past two weeks.
The incident has left many outraged.
Uttar Pradesh is India’s most densely populated state and it’s known for its poor record of crimes against women. There were more than 4,200 reported cases of rape in 2017.
What Will It Take To End Rapes?
On that same Friday, the police shot dead four men who were suspected of raping and killing a 27-year-old veterinarian near Hyderabad City.
The act drew applause from people across the county. However, many surfaced the concern of what might possibly be police brutality.
The issue of rape has been an ongoing concern for countries beyond just India. While nations have taken up the responsibility of educating their people on its consequences, there remains a handful who have yet to make improvements.
It’s upsetting how the numbers remain at a steady increase. It’s disappointing how I have to end this article off by telling all my ladies in here to stay vigilant and cautious of their surroundings. Please take care, friends!
