The Incident That Left An Elderly Worker Bloodied

The accident happened on Wednesday (21 May 2025) around 11am. It took place on the sidewalk in front of Block 106, Hougang Street 61.

The victim’s son, Mr Lin (name transliterated from Mandarin), is 41 and self-employed. He told Shin Min Daily News that his father was working when a food delivery rider on a personal mobility device (PMD) rang his bell from behind.

The rider then sped past.

“My dad is getting on in years and was startled by the sudden noise,” Mr Lin said. “The rider was going very fast. Dad tried to dodge out of the way but slipped and fell, hitting his head on the road shoulder. Blood wouldn’t stop flowing.”

Mr Lin said his father went to a nearby clinic afterwards. The doctor stitched up his eyebrow with eight stitches. “I only found out about the accident when I got home. Seeing him injured like this really breaks my heart.”

Photos provided by Mr Lin show a clear wound above his father’s right eye. His nose also had some scrapes.

Safety Concerns Mount As Rider Fails To Help

The food delivery rider allegedly did not stop to help after the accident.

Mr Lin pointed out that the rider involved didn’t stop to check on his father’s injuries after the incident. Fortunately, a kind passer-by helped his father.

“He probably thought it was just a minor scrape and nothing serious, so he didn’t stop to help,” Mr Lin said. “But dad is an elderly person after all. He should have gotten off to take a look no matter what.”

Mr Lin said riders often speed through this area, raising safety concerns. “Quite a few elderly people walk around there. I think this is very dangerous. There seemed to be enforcement officers checking the area before, but I haven’t seen them recently. I hope riders can pay attention to pedestrian safety.”

Reporter Finds Area Packed With Fast Cyclists

The reporter observed the incident location for one hour and indeed found many bicycle riders passing through.

The reporter visited on Thursday (22 May 2025) evening. The incident location has a bus stop, hawker centre and many shops. Foot traffic was heavy. The sidewalk did have many bicycle riders passing through. Some flashed lights at pedestrians to signal their approach. Many riders were going quite fast.

Mr Lin said his father received three days of medical leave after the incident.
