U.S. President Donald Trump dismissed the attack as a “weak response” to recent American strikes on Iranian nuclear facilities.

Iran Gave Advance Notice

The attack targeted the American air base in neighbouring Qatar, threatening to widen a conflict that began on 13 June with an Israeli strike on Iran.

Iran had threatened retaliation after US bombers dropped 13,600kg bunker-busters on Iranian underground nuclear facilities during the weekend.

Iran fired 14 missiles at the air base according to Trump’s statement. The country gave advance notice to the US through diplomatic channels hours before the attack, as well as to Qatari authorities.

“We did not assault anyone, and we will never accept being assaulted by anyone,” Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei said in a statement. “We will not submit to anyone’s aggression – this is the logic of the Iranian nation.”

Trump seized on the advance notice as a positive sign. “I want to thank Iran for giving us early notice, which made it possible for no lives to be lost, and nobody to be injured,” Trump wrote on his Truth Social platform.

The attack strained Iran’s relationship with Arab neighbours. Qatar condemned the missile strike, along with Bahrain, the United Arab Emirates, Saudi Arabia, Kuwait and Iraq.

Trump Announces Complete Ceasefire Agreement Between Israel and Iran

Israel and Iran agreed to a complete ceasefire beginning at approximately midnight on 24 June, President Donald Trump announced on social media on Monday evening.

The agreement involves two 12-hour ceasefire periods according to Trump’s description. Iran would begin the first ceasefire at approximately 12:00AM EDT, occurring “when Israel and Iran have wound down and completed their in progress, final missions,” Trump stated in his Truth Social post.

Israel would follow with a second 12-hour ceasefire period. After 24 hours, the war would be officially declared ended.

Although an Iranian official had earlier confirmed that Tehran consented to a ceasefire, Foreign Minister Abbas Araqchi later declared that hostilities would not end unless Israel halted its assaults.

“The final decision on the cessation of our military operations will be made later,” Mr Araqchi added in a post on X.

Israel has yet to comment. According to media reports, the Israeli military issued two evacuation alerts to residents in parts of Tehran within a span of less than two hours—one late on June 23 and another in the early hours of June 24.

Israeli Army Radio reported on June 24 that sirens were sounded in the southern Golan Heights area due to fears of hostile aircraft intrusion.

The announcement came two days after the US joined Israel’s war by launching strikes on three Iranian nuclear targets. The conflict began on 13 June when Israel launched strikes against Iran, including dozens of military targets and the country’s nuclear programme, in what Israeli officials called a “preemptive” strike.
