While taking part in an Ironman Triathlon in Portugal last Saturday (15 October), a Singaporean passed away after running into issues that required medical assistance.
The Singaporean, a 36-year-old man, was participating in his seventh Ironman triathlon.

IRONMAN Portugal Released Notice of Participant’s Death
Last Sunday (16 October), IRONMAN Portugal released a statement on Facebook.
The statement revealed that one of its participants of the Ironman Portugal–Cascais triathlon had passed away during the event itself.
“During the swim portion of Saturday’s race, the athlete required and received medical assistance before being transported from the event,” the statement read.
However, “despite best medical efforts”, the participant ended up passing away in the ambulance while it was on the way to the hospital.
The triathlon, also known as the Ironman 70.3 Portugal, involves a 1.9km swim, a 90km bicycle ride, and a 21km half-marathon.
It was first organised over a decade ago in 2011 and attracted around 4,800 participants for this year’s event.
Victim Has Since Been Identified, Cause of Death Not Revealed
Since then, Lianhe Zaobao has reported that the 36-year-old victim was a Singaporean man by the name of Derrick Tee Hui Sheng.

However, his cause of death has yet to be revealed.
Currently, the Honorary Consulate of the Republic of Singapore in Lisbon is currently providing Tee’s family with the necessary assistance.
IRONMAN Portugal also expressed their condolences and sympathies in its Facebook statement.

Deceased Had Participated in Various Ironman Races Over the Past Few Years
Prior to participating in the IRONMAN Portugal triathlon, Tee had apparently participated in other Ironman races.
Based on information posted on the CoachCox website, Tee had taken part in six different Ironman races before the COVID-19 pandemic from 2016 to 2019.

The races he took part in included those that were held in Bintan and Sydney.
Out of the six races, he managed to complete four of them.
