Isetan, a Japanese department store, officially closed its Tampines Mall outlet on 9 Nov 2025 after 30 years as the mall’s anchor tenant.
The closure follows the expiry of its lease agreement, marking the end of a long-standing presence since the mall opened in 1996.
Lease Expiry Drives Closure Decision
The decision to cease operations at Tampines Mall was made after consideration of local market conditions and future profitability, aligning with Isetan’s broader business objectives, a company spokesperson said earlier in the year.
The department store has planned moving-out sales to clear inventory before shutting down. Isetan continues to operate its remaining outlets in Singapore, located at Shaw House in Orchard and NEX in Serangoon.
Three Decades as Anchor Tenant
As the anchor tenant of Tampines Mall for three decades, Isetan provided a wide variety of products, including homeware, clothing, footwear, beauty products, and groceries. This closure is part of a broader trend, following the earlier shutdown of Isetan stores in Westgate (2020) and Parkway Parade (2022). Only two Isetan stores now remain in Singapore.
Mall Rejuvenation Plans Underway
The operator of Tampines Mall, CapitaLand, confirmed it has been preparing plans to rejuvenate the mall space. It intends to introduce new brands in the vacated retail space, including fashion and beauty retailers, to enhance the mall’s tenant mix and refresh shopping options for visitors.
Isetan’s departure has garnered responses from shoppers who view the store as an iconic part of Tampines Mall’s landscape.
Isetan first came to Singapore in 1972 at Apollo Hotel on Havelock Road. Over the years, several outlets have closed, with Tampines being a notable location that had served the community and shoppers for 30 years.
