Everybody would know of a Karen. I’m not talking about an actual person called Karen. I’m talking about that A-HOLE SUNAVA B KAREN WHO ALWAYS GOTTA RUIN THINGS.
Sorry, I’m getting a little emotional here. Yes, there’s always someone like that you know. Their real name might not be a Karen, but their behaviour makes them a Karen.
Even at the time that I got to meet a real person named Karen…
But enough about Karen.
Because this Maserati driver who dragged a police officer 124m along the road while also being disqualified from driving seems to be introducing a contender for Karen: Kelvin.
Move aside Karen, Kelvin’s gotta show you who’s the real cheese pie here.
Maserati Driver Signaled By Police Officer To Stop
(As usual, we’re simplifying a lot here. So click the links if you want to find nuance and legal mumbo jumbo.)
Lee Cheng Yan, 35, drove his $175,000 Maserati to pick up a laptop from another man at Bedok Reservoir on 17 Nov 2017. A police officer happened to see him driving without a seat belt on later and signalled to stop.
If you had read the article title, you can already guess what happened next: Lee refused to stop.
You can find a video of Lee recklessly driving here:
Lee only got stopped by traffic at a junction which allowed the officer to finally catch up.
But even then, Lee immediately sped away to flee…
With the officer still hanging from the car’s door.
The officer’s jacket got stuck in the side door, and this meant that Lee dragged the officer for 124m at a speed of 79 kmh to 84 kmh.
That’s the kind of shit I’ve only seen in gangster movies, and I believe those kill people.
Thankfully, the officer survived. But this resulted in more than 20 days medical leave for injuries to his knee, neck, and back. The officer was also medically downgraded by the Home Team’s medical board.
I’m not 100% sure on this, but I do believe that medical grades play an important role in career prospects for jobs that require personnel to be medically fit.
Lee’s Clean Up
Lee then left his Maserati along Willow Ave and called a friend to pick him up.
Then, they went to another friend’s home and Lee told them about everything that happened. Lee threw his white t-shirt he had been wearing down a rubbish chute.
And Then In Court, Lee Said Kelvin Did It
Thus far, Lee had done the following:
- Failing to wear a seatbelt while driving
- Failing to stop when ordered by a police officer
- Severely injuring a public servant
- They later also found out Lee was driving while disqualified
And while there seems to be a lot of evidence against Lee, he pulled the “It wasn’t me” card in court.
The argument here is that there’s only one witness who identified Lee as the driver and because it was only “a fleeting glance made through a heavily tinted window”, the account is not trustable.
Instead, the person actually driving in that scenario, as Lee and his lawyer claims, is that Kelvin was the one driving.
What the-
Who The F Is Kelvin?
Apparently this Kelvin is, as Lee testified in court, the same built as him, and also wore a similar white t-shirt as him. Lee claimed he went for dinner at that time, and Kelvin borrowed his car.
Nani?! What is this plot twist? Who is Kelvin? Does he really exist? Have we been mistaken? Is it his evil twin? A doppelganger? A time traveller? Or is it… Lee’s English name?
And although this Kelvin person does indeed look and sound like an ahole according to the actions he had done, there seems to be little pointing to this Kelvin even existing.
Lee did not even know Kelvin’s last name and address, and a number provided out was “not in use”.
Wow, you must really trust this Kelvin person to lend him a $175K car while not knowing him that well! I guess looking similar to him and having the same shirt must really have bonded you quickly!
Here’s where I remind you that this traffic incident happened in 2017, which meant that Lee had two whole years to find Kelvin.
Which also meant that for two whole years, prosecutors had been asking “where’s Kelvin” this entire time.
Lee’s Sentencing To Be On 14 Jan 2020
The judge found Lee guilty of the charges beyond reasonable doubt; the ten charges including voluntarily causing grievous hurt to a public servant, failing to stop after an accident and obstructing justice.
Prosecution asked for his bail to be increased by at least 50% on the current $60,000, to which the judge increased to $70,000. Maximum penalties for voluntarily causing grievous hurt to deter a public servant from his/her duty are a jail term of 15 years and a fine or caning.
Lee will be sentenced on 14 Jan 2020.
Which means that he still has time to find Kelvin.
