Ghosting is something that’s pretty common in dating circles.
It is when someone will just end a relationship suddenly and without explanation… disappearing like a “ghost”, hence the term.
However, from what Jack Neo revealed in his interview with Shin Min Daily (新明日报), ghosting happens in online businesses as well!

Customers Ghosting Jack Neo After Placing an Order
Filmmaker-turned-e-commerce-entrepreneur, Jack Neo, recently talked about the many odd customers he encountered while doing a livestream selling premium durians.
When asked by the reporter from Shin Min Daily (新明日报), he said, “Some people will place an order and not pay for their order, so we couldn’t send out the goods. They then come and argue with us, asking where their order is.”
“Sometimes, even when the goods are delivered to their doorstep, the customer isn’t around to receive it. My delivery staff will also get scolded as a result, to the point where they became tearful,” he added.
The oddest customer yet is likely the person who ordered 20 boxes of premium durians.
According to Jack, after placing the order, the customer simply vanished into thin air it seems and this isn’t a one-off thing.
Apparently, this kind of customer makes up around 30% of his total customers.
“Some people place an order just to get a chance in the lucky draw; others place large orders but don’t pay.”
“These people hog our limited stock, and in the end, the people who really want to buy our durians couldn’t get them while the customers who have already placed orders just ignore you when you ask them to pay.”

Is Online Selling “Shameful” for Jack Neo?
As the pandemic devastates the tourism industry, the film industry has taken quite a hit as well.
This spurred established filmmaker, Jack Neo, to delve into his business of selling premium durians online.
According to him, some people couldn’t adapt to the times and will think that for a filmmaker to sell stuff online is “humiliating” and that he should feel shameful.
However, he pointed out that, in China, people who are successfully selling online can bring in an astounding amount of money.
After all, during the pandemic, many consumers have turned to online businesses to buy the stuff they need.

He even claimed that “selling online is even harder to do than filming a movie”!
The reason given is that there’s the film crew that he could rely on when shooting a film, but online sellers, especially those doing live broadcasts, only have themselves to rely on.
Filmmaking is Still His Ultimate Passion
Despite finding a new venture to dive into during the pandemic, it’s obvious that for Jack Neo, filmmaking remains his one true passion.
He’s actually considering making a movie or a short film about online selling, featuring the many weird customers that he has encountered.
He’s also interested to film a movie for Chinese New Year or perhaps a new web series, once the pandemic is over.
