Deep down in our hearts, most of us wonder what it’s like to be famous. To be well-known that people will look inconspicuously at you out of the corner of their eyes.
Or come up to you and say they love your work.
Like what my old grandmama likes to say, the grass is always greener on the other side.
Because fame is a double-edged sword. One that can kill you even before you reach for the sky.
Like what it did to Jacky Wu’s son, Ricky Wu.
Jacky Wu, the iconic host of 90s kids
Before we had Yoo Jae Suk, the national MC of South Korea and part-time secret agent, we had Jacky Wu.
He entertained us with his cold jokes…
…his dirty jokes
…and his singing. Which is nice but funny as hell too.
Well, recently, he made headlines together with his son, Ricky Wu, unfortunately for the wrong reasons.
Ricky Wu Got Into Serious Trouble
On 20 Aug, 19-year-old Ricky Wu got into trouble when he uploaded this particular Instagram story.
Well, he threatened to blow up the Taipei City Hall if his girlfriend didn’t recover from her illness. Which is weird.
And with that, all hell breaks loose.
An Angry Public + A Public Apology By Jacky Wu
Instagram stories are used because they’re supposed to be less incriminating. After all, it disappears after 24 hours.
Remember how we talked about fame being a double-edged sword? Well, it kind of bit Ricky Wu in the ass.
Somebody grabbed a screenshot of his Instagram story and leaked it onto the internet.
The public gave a huge outcry, the police got involved and Ricky Wu had written a public apology on his Facebook account to explain his side of the story.
It was an inside joke with his friends
Here’s a translation of what he wrote (feel free to skip if you’ve understood his post)
No matter what, I’ll like to apologise to everyone first. I’m sorry for cracking a joke that shouldn’t be said. I apologise for not understanding that as a public figure, I need to be careful with my words and action.
No matter whether it’s a personal or public matter, I apologise for letting so many people down.
Actually, threatening to bomb Taipei City Hall is an inside joke between me and my mates in the army. I didn’t realise that my personal Instagram’s meme will lead to such drastic consequences.
I will assist the police in their investigation and face the consequences of what I’ve done. My family has scolded me for what I’ve done.
Ricky Wu will be leaving the entertainment industry as well
In the very public apology given by Jacky Wu and Ricky Wu, the legendary host of the 90 gave his son a good scolding.
你现在身上唯一一点的亮度就是你是吳宗憲的儿子。你屌什么? (The only thing you have right now is the fact that you’re (my) son. What are you so arrogant about?)
Jacky Wu also told his son to “get out of my way”, announcing to the public that his son, Ricky Wu, will be leaving the entertainment industry.
Ricky Wu has just dropped his debut album, Ambulance, less than a month ago.
But hey, at least Jacky Wu is willing to let his son take the consequences all by himself instead of shielding him like a strawberry, no? That deserves respect.
