There’s no good way to put this: traffic accidents suck.
I don’t drive but I imagine someone crashing into your vehicle could ruin your day.
Especially cause cars are also mad expensive in Singapore.
Not only does it affect the two parties but now others are held up by the accident due to jams.
The worst scenario? Sometimes these awful driving accidents cause death.
Against The Traffic
In this case, someone really might have had something wrong with his head.
According to Channel News Asia, Lim Chai Heng, 56, was sentenced to a year’s jail on Nov 25.
He drove against the flow of traffic three years ago on Ayer Rajah Expressway (AYE), killing one person and injuring four others.
It was mentioned that he had acute psychosis at the time and had extremely impaired judgement.
Four other charges relating to the hurt or grievous hurt caused by a rash act that endangered the life or personal safety of others were also taken into consideration for sentencing purposes.
He has also been (rightfully) banned from driving for 12 years.
This whole situation sounds crazy because most of us would think, “Why drive against traffic?”
Take a listen, because things get pretty weird and scary.
Was Sending His Son To Work
On December 2016, Lim was driving his son to the Central Manpower Base (CMPB) for work. The pair were coming from their home in Hougang.
After he passed the Braddell Road exit, Lim’s son asked why he did not exit the Central Expressway (CTE) to avoid Electronic Road Pricing charges.
Lim merely brushed it off and claimed he knew the way.
He continued into AYE and even increased his speed to 100 km/h all while ignoring his son’s request to exit the expressway.
By a certain point, he was way far from CMPB and entered the motorcycle lane.
He eventually stopped when the lane got too narrow, made a turn and this is where the whole driving against traffic part happened.
Even after merging with the traffic he went through the Tuas Checkpoint Departure Viaduct and back onto the AYE.
At this point, he was driving on lane one, and approached a vehicle driven by Tan Han Boon.
Accidents And Aftermath
Tan swerved to avoid Lim’s car but in doing so collided with a bus on the next lane. His car spun across the front of the bus and hit a concrete wall.
Lim’s car then hit another on lane one and sent it spinning into lane three.
The next victim, as some of you know, was Jackie Leong, an actor whose car was also hit and who died on the scene. His wife had multiple fractures and underwent surgery.
Lim’s car then went into lane three and crashed into a motorcycle.
The rider and his wife, Teh Tze Yong and Choo Yat Chiam both had to undergo surgery too.
But even with all that bad stuff, the case gets even scarier.
Possibly due to his psychosis, Lim claimed that he was ‘being controlled by god’ and was hearing voices.
He reported that ‘god’ was telling him where to go and even told his son that ‘god’ was not going to let him go to work.
That is majorly creepy.
However, Lim also said that he was aware of his actions and admitted to the severity of them.
The judge stated that though the sentence might be harsh, several injuries and the loss of life called for it.
Staying safe on the road won’t only help you, it’ll reduce the possibility of things like this happening as well.
In cases where you’re unwell, don’t drive at all. Save yourself and other nasty cases like this.
