Here’s what you shouldn’t do when you see a woman drunk at a karaoke lounge: sexually assault her.

And if your conscience isn’t enough to stop you from doing it, here’s another reason why you shouldn’t take advantage of drunk women.

In public or anywhere else.

31-Year-Old Man Sentenced to 6 Years’ Jail and Caning for Sexually Assaulting Drunk Woman at Karaoke Lounge

On Tuesday (2 Mar), a 31-year-old work permit holder, Li Jie, was sentenced to 6 years’ jail and three strokes of the cane.

His offence? For sexually assaulting a drunk woman while at a KTV lounge.

Here’s What Happened

Back in 2018, Li, aged 28 then, met a 28-year-old woman on the online dating app Tantan.

They messaged on WeChat and met up for beer at a coffeeshop.

About a week later on 26 Aug 2018, the woman invited Li out again for drinks at a coffee shop in Yishun.

They shared four bottles of beer between them before making their way to a nearby karaoke lounge, where they booked a room.

While inside, the woman drank a lot of alcohol and got progressively intoxicated.

Sometime between midnight and 1:50am, that was when the unfortunate incident happened.

Pinned Her Down

Li reportedly pinned her down on the couch and the victim could feel something protruding against her thigh.

She struggled but was unable to mount a defence against Li’s strength.

No one responded when she shouted for help and pressed the service button.

Li proceeded to reach below her dress and sexually assault her.

Eventually, the woman managed to make her escape after she told Li she needed the toilet “urgently”.

Caught

Upon leaving the room, the woman went to the service counter in the lounge and called the police, claiming that someone had tried to rape her.

When the police officers arrived at around 1.55am, she was hysterically crying and couldn’t speak clearly.

She managed to calm down soon after and told them what happened.

Li was arrested on the scene.

When the woman was sent to KK Women’s and Children’s hospital, she was found with superficial scratches and bruises on her upper thigh, knees, arm and hand.

Defence

In mitigation, Li’s lawyer argued that the crime was not premeditated (not planned out) and that Li has not used “gratuitous” violence on the woman.

It was added that Li is married with two young children.

Li’s sentence was backdated to September 2020 when he was first placed in police custody.

For sexual assault by penetration, he could’ve been jailed up to 20 years, and fined or caned.
