Jamus Lim is a man who captured a lot of Singaporeans’ hearts when he went up against seasoned politicians in a live debate on TV.
Well, as it turns out, it’s not just Sengkang’s voters who had their hearts captured.
Yesterday (22 July 2020), it was reported that Jamus Lim was voted into the Economic Society of Singapore (ESS) Council, along with 5 other members.
The ESS has 36 members and is headed by president Euston Quah.
Not Just A Non-Profit Organisation
ESS isn’t just a society that anyone can enter.
Formed in 1956, this non-profit organisation publishes the Singapore Economic Review (SER), which is widely known as the leading economics journal in the Asia-Pacific (APAC) region.
The organisation has members from the academic, government and business sectors, and they organise conferences and networking sessions to discuss the current economic issues related to Singapore and within the region.
All in all, a powerful group that is known to the people who can make decisions.
Politicians Honoured By The ESS
So who are the movers and shakers?
First one is, of course, the current prime minister of Singapore:
He was a guest of honour and spoke at ESS’s annual dinner back in 2012.
Another is Mr Goh Chok Tong.
Mr Tharman Shamugarathnam and DPM Heng Swee Keat are reportedly ESS honorary fellows.
Who Is Jamus Lim?
Okay, we’ve heard a lot about his finger hearts and his gamxia Sengkang, but in case you don’t know, he’s an economics expert.
Maybe that’s why he sounds so convincing when he talks about minimum wage, huh?
According to his LinkedIn account, he is currently an associate professor of economics at ESSEU Business School (APAC) and Chief Economist at the Thirdrock Group.
He was also a lead economist at the Strategy and Planning Department of the Abu Dhabi Investment Authority and senior economist in the Development Prospects Group of the World Bank.
Before he ran for elections, he was invited onto news programmes to offer his thoughts and opinions on economic matters:
According to MSNews, he is also a blackbelt in Taekwondo, a wine connoisseur, a French speaker, an ex-rugby player and a drummer.
Well, with him now stepping into the ESS, we can’t wait to see what else he can bring to Singapore, can we?
