Rumours have it that even aliens living in Jupiter were waiting for Jay Chou’s latest song to drop last Monday (16 September 2019).

That’s understandable; the king of mandopop has been teasing us about this new song, “Won’t Cry”, and it’s been one year since he released a new song.

The MV was released on YouTube at 11pm last Monday, and within 30 minutes, it garnered well over 300,000 views.

Remember: YouTube’s banned in China, so that could have been more viewers.

Today, which is about one week later, it has clocked well over 19 million views, and it’s been #1 trending in YouTube for like, forever.

But like what the headline says, people are offended.

“Video Portrays Patriarchal & is Sexist”

Before anything, you need to know more about the man himself.

Jay Chou is married to Hannah Quinlivan, who herself is a successful actress. Other than starring with The Rock in a Hollywood film before, the 26-year-old might even be casted in a future Marvel movie. She doesn’t own her success to Jay Chou, for she’s been acting even before their relationship was made public.

The couple also flirted with each other online regularly, and Jay is well-known to be a doting father and husband. I’m not going to list down the things he’s done because that’ll open a can of worms for jealous girlfriend / wife.

In other words, it’s pretty clear that Jay himself respects woman: so much so that he even has an album named after his mother.

In his latest song’s MV, though, people took offence at the storyline that seemed to be written by a 15-year-old girl who’s willing to do anything for her crush.

Here’s the story lest you’re not one of the 19 million people who’ve watched the MV: a lady worked in a bubble tea shop, and a photographer left his ID there. The lady went to his studio to return the ID and they fell in love.

The photographer wanted to go for a photography course and a new camera. The girl worked doubly hard to earn enough money and paid for the guy’s photography course and camera.

The guy went off for his course, and came back, and the girl was still working hard. They hugged and they seemed to live happily ever after.

Nothing’s wrong, right?

Level 99 Feminist: Everything’s wrong

Some people find it sexist because it shows a stereotypical view of how women would sacrifice everything for the men.

It’s allegedly “out of date”.

I wonder how people would react when a guy works his ass off to buy many expensive gifts, only to be rejected by a woman.

Oh, wait, there’s a term for it: friendzone.

The most quoted comment is by a fiction writer in China, Deng Anqin. He said, “After all these years, Jay Chou’s new music video shows that some men still dream of a world where a beautiful woman willingly works herself to the bone to support their dream.”

And the best-est part of this? Deng is a guy.

Classic.

Jay Chou’s Response

The 40-year-old superstar seems unfazed by all the criticism.

The song itself is a commercial success despite feedback that it’s not as good as his previous song: hours after the release of the song, it has sold millions of digital copies. Over in China, tour agencies are making big bucks after people sought to visit Tokyo, the setting of the MV.

Instead of commenting on the criticisms, Jay decided to just post short silly videos of him doing magic tricks on Instagram, while asking fans to watch the MV:
