Imagine this: You’re driving along an expressway, happily minding your own business on a Sunday morning when suddenly, you saw an aeroplane landing on the stretch of road right before you.
That was what drivers who were driving along the North-South Expressway in Johor on Sunday morning, 22 Nov, experienced.
Everything About the Plane Flown by S’poreans That Made an Emergency Landing in a JB Expressway
According to reports, a private plane was flying from Singapore to Melaka when it started experiencing technical difficulties.
The Civil Aviation Authority of Malaysia (CAAM) said that one of the pilots had requested to land at Senai International Airport at 10.40am.
The plane had subsequently landed safely at KM47.8 on the south-bound of the expressway at around 11.15am, according to the Malay Mail.
The aircraft model is a Beechcraft Model 35 Bonanza operated by Premier Air Singapore.
Purpose Of Flight
Both of the pilots are Singaporeans.
The pilot is 52-year-old Dr Yang Kuang Ying while the co-pilot is 41-year-old Saleehullah Abdul Majid.
According to Kulai district police chief Supt Tok Beng Yeow, the pair were out on a routine flight to fulfil their flight records.
No Injuries Or Fatalities Reported
PLUS Traffic Monitoring Centre (TMC) was notified about a missing aircraft by the Senai Air Traffic Control (ATC) radar at 10.55am.
They were asked to monitor the roads and provide assistance if necessary.
At 10.56am, TMC received calls from “highway customers” notifying them about an aircraft sighted on the highway.
Immediately, a team was dispatched to the scene and the police and fire department were alerted.
The team that was dispatched, together with help from the CAAM and the police, managed to establish a temporary safe zone on the highway.
The plane was subsequently pushed to the side of the road to ease traffic congestion.
There were no injuries or fatalities reported in this incident.
Landed Due To Technical Difficulties
A news outlet, Utusan Malaysia, reported that the pilots had heard a “small explosion” from the plane’s engine and decide to make an emergency landing on the highway.
An inspection of the plane reveals that the plane had not caught fire and the two pilots didn’t suffer any injuries.
In a statement, authorities revealed that the pilots made the decision to make an emergency landing after the plane’s oil pressure continued to drop rapidly about 5,000 feet above the ground.
The engines of the plane had apparently stalled, according to Kulai OCPD, Sup Tok Beng Yeow.
CAAM, in their statement, had announced that the two pilots are in stable conditions.
It was further reported that the Air Accident Investigation Bureau under Malaysia’s Ministry of Transport will be investigating the incident further.
