Following the closure of the 29-year-old Puteri Pacific Hotel in August, yet another long-standing establishment is bidding us farewell in October.
This time around, Parkson departmental store at Holiday Plaza bites the dust.
Clearance Sale Till 4 October
A familiar sight to those who cross the causeway over to JB, the departmental store located at Holiday Plaza is now holding a clearance sale till October 4.
All items are up to 70% discount.
According to Zaobao, the 20-day clearance sale, which began on 15 Sep 2-2-, drew large crowds over the past few days.
Many expressed nostalgia over the store’s closure due to its long history.
Long Queues Spotted Outside Parkson Departmental Store
A queue as long as the length of 15 shops was spotted outside Parkson. Throngs of people were there to shop for items at steep discounts.
Some of those in the line were prepared to wait for one to two hours to enter the departmental store.
Flashback to IKEA Singapore queue, anyone?
This was a much different sight as compared to the first day of the sale.
After netizens promoted the clearance sale online, long queues started forming on the 3rd day, 17 Sep 2020.
According to China Press, some measures were taken to prevent overcrowding.
One includes giving out queue numbers to those in line. Only those with queue numbers were allowed into the departmental store.
In addition, the number of people in the store was also restricted. This is done so that safe distancing measures implemented for Covid-19 is adhered to.
You can see the queue for yourself here:
Two Other Branches Near JB
The three-storey departmental store at Holiday Plaza is the first branch for Parkson at JB.
With its closure, shoppers can continue their retail therapy at two other branches within close proximity, located at Paradigm Mall and Angsana Mall.
According to Oriental Daily, the staff working at Holiday Plaza will be deployed to these two other branches.
The departmental store was a popular destination amongst Singaporeans during weekends too.
About Parkson
Established in 1987, Parkson has a long-standing presence in Malaysia. The brand also extended its footprint to other countries, with its first overseas store in China in 1994.
Parkson subsequently opened its stores at Vietnam in 2005, Indonesia in 2011 and Myanmar in 2013.
Though we can’t head over to JB now for the great deals, let’s hope we can cross the causeway in time to come for the amazing food and to satisfy our urge for retail therapy.
Although judging by the climate there, it probably won’t be happening anytime soon.
