In recent entertainment news, there have been talks that Jet Li, the famous Chinese kung fu megastar is suffering badly from his hyperthyroidism and will need a wheelchair very soon.
Due to such alarming news, even friends of Jet Li are contacting him to check if he is indeed that ill.
Appearance to dispel rumours
After the spate of disturbing news, Jet Li decided to make an appearance at One’s Foundation charity dinner in July despite his puffy eyes and swollen face caused by his medical condition.
The 52-year-old actor explained that he has been battling hyperthyroidism since 2013, and this illness has caused several issues with his health.
The effects of his illness
For one, his metabolism has been vastly affected which caused his weight to fluctuate drastically over a short period of time.
His heart rate is also affected, going up to 130 to 140 beats per minute even when he is at rest.
When it first started, the actor had to take medication laced with steroids to stabilise his condition.
After a year, his condition stabilised but it relapsed two years later and caused his body and eyes to become visibly swollen.
It is because of these swells that news of his impending fate of needing a wheelchair becomes rampant.
Rumours placed to make him a spokesperson for wheelchairs
The Straits Times also spoke to Jet Li over the telephone when he was in Beijing to find out more about his deteriorating health.
Jet Li rubbished the news that he will need a wheelchair to move about and even jokes that “[he is] not sure which wheelchair company is putting out such news to sell more wheelchairs. Perhaps someone wants [him] to be a spokesman for their wheelchairs.”
Jet Li has clarified that he is recovering and is confident that he will be alright once again.
He plans to place focus on charity work
When he was asked why he scaled back on his acting, Jet Li explained that he had done so on purpose so that he could focus on charity work which he is committed to, such as One Foundation in China as its founder.
Working to regain his youth
Li also revealed to The Straits Times that he is keen to regain his youth mentally.
“I feel what is important is the mindset. You can undergo cosmetic surgery to look younger, but is the use if you think like an old person. But you can be 80 years old, be positive and still have a youthful outlook on life.” – Jet Li
Li said that he feels adults are complicated and tend to overthink everything. He prefers to be relaxed and do his best not to overthink his problems.
He hopes to achieve the intuitiveness and innocence of a five-year-old child. and he is, in fact, working towards that goal.
