A Jetstar flight from Bali to Melbourne was forced to turn back on 31 March 2025 after a female passenger attempted to open one of the aircraft doors while the plane was flying.

Flight JQ34 departed from Denpasar Ngurah Rai International Airport at approximately 8:40 PM local time carrying over 200 passengers.

About an hour into the journey, while cruising at an altitude of 33,000 feet, the incident occurred.

According to Jetstar, the woman tried to force open one of the aircraft doors and was abusive toward the crew, prompting the decision to return to Bali.

Passenger Motivation

Australian reality star Brooke Jowett, who was on the flight, shared on social media that the woman was upset because her seat wouldn’t recline.

“She wanted to sit in a different row and have a chair that could recline, so she decided to try to open the doors,” Jowett explained.

The woman’s actions triggered a warning alert to the crew after she lifted the door handle.

A fellow passenger, reportedly an off-duty police officer sitting near the toilets, pulled her away from the door as she was attempting to open it.

Captain’s Announcement

In a recording shared on social media, the captain addressed passengers about the situation after the plane returned to Bali.

He assured passengers that opening a door during flight is “an impossibility” due to cabin pressurisation, especially in modern aircraft flying above 10,000 feet.

Aftermath

Upon landing back at Denpasar Airport, local authorities removed the disruptive passenger from the aircraft. The flight was subsequently cancelled, and Jetstar made alternative arrangements for the affected passengers.

One passenger described the experience as an “absolute nightmare” on Instagram, noting there were “260 frightened and angry passengers” when police escorted the woman off the plane.

Jetstar has since banned the woman from flying with the airline, according to reports.

“The safety and welfare of our customers and crew is our top priority and we thank them for the way they responded to the situation,” a Jetstar spokesperson said in a statement.

“This sort of unacceptable behaviour will never be tolerated on our flights,” the airline added.
