The Singapore-Malaysia Causeway is possibly one of the busiest roads in Malaysia and Singapore.
Just take a look at this.
And this.
Yup.
So it’s no wonder that there are people who are willing to make a 1.2km trek across on foot.
Even though it’s dangerous as heck.
So dangerous that the Malaysian government had put up a sign advising people not to walk. But if they do, they’re not liable for their safety.
But here’s the thing.
It’s Going To Get Safer
Johor Public Works, Infrastructure and Transportation Committee chairman Mohd Solihan Badri announced that they’re looking into building a 1.2km covered walkway for pedestrians.
This proposed footpath will be covered so you can walk, rain or shine. It’ll be built on existing motorcycle lanes both to and from Malaysia.
This project is expected to cost RM 15 million (~SGD 4.91 million).
But You’ll Have To Wait For A While Before This Comes True
The entire plan is still at its proposal stage.
“Consultants are preparing a detailed proposal for the state government to study and it should be ready in about two or three weeks,” Mr Mohd Solihan said.
But it’s not just two or three weeks.
Singapore’s Ministry of Transport said that they have yet to hear any official proposal or notice form their Malaysian counterparts.
But they added that there is already a pedestrian walkway on Singapore’s side. And that Malaysia is more than welcome to link the proposed walkway to Singapore’s existing pedestrian path.
Good News For Johor Bahru People Who Travels In To S’pore
For the sake of JB people who commute into Singapore on a daily basis, I sincerely wish the covered pedestrian walkway becomes a reality.
After all, there are too many times where our hopes are risen up (for Singaporeans, because no more jams & Malaysians, easier commute to a full day of work) only to be dashed.
Like the JB-SG Rapid Transit System (RTS) which was supposed to be operational by 2024 and make JB people’s life easier.
Except it was suspended until 30 Sep 2019, and it wasn’t known if the project is due to continue after the suspension.
This isn’t the first time cases of pedestrians on the Causeway was brought up. According to a CNA video, the Malaysian government had promised to convert the old CiQ into a pedestrian-only immigration.
That, obviously, didn’t happen.
You can watch this video to see how people are crossing the causeway on foot right now.
