A 16-year-old boy has been arrested in Kulai, Johor, for allegedly using artificial intelligence to create fake nude images of women before selling them online for RM2 (60 Singapore cents) each.

Johor police chief M Kumar said the teenager was apprehended on 8 Apr 2025 at 5 PM following an investigation triggered by multiple reports.

The suspect, believed to be a student at Foon Yew High School, allegedly sourced photos of his victims from social media platforms before using AI tools to edit their faces onto nude bodies.

“One victim, an 18-year-old woman, discovered explicit images featuring her face circulating online. The photos had been manipulated using AI,” Kumar said in a statement.

After finding her doctored images being sold online, the woman lodged a police report on 3 Apr 2025, which sparked the investigation.

Police have seized a mobile phone believed to have been used to edit and distribute the content.

The teenager has been remanded for four days until 12 Apr 2025 to assist with investigations.

Multiple Victims from School and Alumni Community

The case has grown significantly with a total of eight police reports involving the same suspect having been lodged by victims so far.

Deputy Communications Minister Teo Nie Ching, who is also the Kulai MP, revealed that the actual number of victims might be as high as 40, ranging from current students as young as 14 years old to alumni of Foon Yew High School.

“A majority of them are the school’s alumni. However, there are also current students as young as 14 years old,” she said in a statement on 9 Apr 2025.

Teo added that some victims might have been still unaware that their images had been maliciously manipulated and distributed.

“We learned that multiple groups using the name ‘Foon Yew’ have emerged on social media platforms. These groups have been circulating obscene photos generated using deepfake technology,” she said.

Foon Yew High School confirmed in a statement released on 8 Apr 2025 that they had received reports of anonymous individuals spreading fake images of both students and alumni of the school.

Police Investigation and Support for Victims

The case is being investigated under Section 292 of the Penal Code for the sale, distribution or possession of obscene material and Section 233 of the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998 for improper use of network facilities.

Teo has instructed the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission to work closely with the police to expedite the investigation process.

Police have urged other victims to come forward and lodge reports at their nearest police station, while reminding the public not to share photos of the victims on social media.

She added that victims who have yet to lodge police reports can reach out to her office for assistance, including legal advice and emotional support.
