If you’re a frequent purveyor of JCube (there’s a relatively emptier Don Don Donki outlet inside compared to the one at JEM), you’ll quickly notice that opposite mall, there’s a structure that looks suspiciously like a bus interchange.

It’s been there for quite some time now but you’ve heard nothing about a new bus interchange…until now, that is.

Yes, the Jurong East bus interchange will be relocated temporarily once again and this time, it’ll be for quite a long time.

Jurong East Interchange Will Be Relocated Again; This Time It’ll Reopen in 2027

According to the Land Transport Authority (LTA), the Jurong East interchange will be temporarily relocated to opposite its current location just beside JCube from 6 Dec 2020.

The reason for the move?

To facilitate the construction of the Jurong Regional Line (you can read more about the upcoming line here) and the Jurong East Integrated Transport Hub.

The construction is expected to be completed by 2027.

Yes, this means that for people who frequently take the MRT to Jurong East before changing to a bus service at the interchange just beside the MRT station, you won’t be able to enjoy the side-by-side experience for the next seven years.

Not to worry, though, because while it’s now on opposite sides of the road, a pedestrian overhead bridge, equipped with elevators and escalators, has been built to connect the two.

New Bus Stop

Because the interchange is moved so far away, LTA is also creating a new bus stop opposite JEM so that passengers have a nearer bus stop to the MRT station.

Another two bus stops, located outside Blk 131 and before Jurong East MRT Station along Jurong Gateway Road have been expanded as well to deal with increased commuters and buses.

Changes To Bus Services Routes & Stops

  • 97/97e: Enter the bus interchange via Jurong East St 12 and Jurong Gateway Road
  • 333: Enter bus interchange via Boon Lay Way and Jurong Gateway Road
  • 78: Start journey at the bus stop outside Blk 131 and end service at the bus stop before Jurong East Interchange
  • 79: Does not enter Jurong East Bus Interchange but loops around the Jurong East town centre via Jurong East Street 12, Jurong Gateway Road, Jurong East Central and Jurong Town Hall Road. Commuters who want to board the bus can do so outside Jurong Regional Library or outside Blk 131.
  • Cross Border 3/4: Will pick up and drop off at Venture Avenue instead of Jurong East bus interchange when allowed to operate again

More Spacious Boarding Areas, Better For Persons-With-Disabilities (PWDs)

According to LTA’s press release, the boarding areas of the new temporary interchange is more spacious than the old one.

In addition, the graduated kerb edges also make it easier for people on wheelchairs to board buses.

A bus berth signalling board will be set up near the bus park to indicate the availability of berths, reducing the amount of congestion within the small bus interchange.

The big fans you usually see at new MRT stations will also be installed in the interchange to keep commuters cool and comfortable.

The bus interchange also comes with the usual amenities, including a nursing room and toilets.

One thing for sure, though: at least JCube is likely to see increased foot traffic from the start of next month.
