Starbucks had recently secured a foothold along East Coast Road.
The multinational coffeehouse gave us a peek of its new outlet at Katong Square last week.
The series of swoon-worthy pictures have certainly got netizens bouncing off the walls, eager to update their Instagram after being robbed of travel photo-ops this year.
Ditching their usual subdued, cosy ambience, the latest establishment is airy and open.
Gone are the dark wood and exposed brick walls that constitute an industrial ensemble; the cafe instead dons a cheerful facade that leans towards minimalism.
Dreamy Peranakan-inspired interior
Setting up shop in a spacious corner unit, the cafe is fixed with geometrical furniture; the elegant curves of which complement the arches of the preserved architecture.
A palette of muted green and warm neutrals sets a pleasing atmosphere. The linearity occasionally interrupted by pastel accents and bold patterns.
On the walls hung frescos by local artist Danielle Tay, who drew inspiration from the Peranakan background of the district to create a series of playful illustrations and murals.
The space takes in a generous amount of natural light through its retrofitted glass windows. Patrons can enjoy the charming streetscape with plenty of seating.

Pumpkin Spice Latte is back
For the autumn months, Starbucks has brought back its bestselling Pumpkin Spice Latte.
The Iced Almondmilk Hazelnut Latte and Pumpkin Spice Cream Cold Brew are also novel additions to the fall menu.
While the scenery is perpetually green in Singapore, a sip of the beverages and an active imagination should be able to make up for the falling maple leaves we won’t be seeing this year.

Nestled in a heritage building
The location of the new storefront boasts significant historical and cultural value.
Situated in the heart of Katong, Katong Square is flanked by i12 Katong mall and Katong Plaza.
It originally housed the Joo Chiat Police Station. According to the Urban Redevelopment Authority, it was also used to detain triad gang members.
Most notably, the residential suburb and its neighbouring Joo Chiat precinct are steeped in rich Peranakan heritage, which Starbucks paid tribute to through the new outlet’s interior design.
