At least once in your life, you’d have felt hangry.
If you haven’t guessed it yet, it’s a combination of two words, hungry and angry. Basically, because you’re so hungry, you’re easily annoyed and irritated.
And nothing’s worse than being hungry, then finding out that your food is inedible, right?
Singaporeans aren’t strangers to weird stuff in our food. And when I say weird, I’m talking Ripley’s Believe it or not kind of weird.
Like maggots in a burger.
Or an alleged worm found in McDonald’s burger.
And on 31 July, Kellogg’s joins the ranks of these food misadventures.
Maggots and Dead Flies Found in Kellogg’s Cereal
On 22 July 2018, Ms Ifaa Insyiirah took to Facebook to complain about Kellogg’s cereal. She claimed that she had purchased two boxes of the cereal from two different shops.
And both products had issues.
One had dead flies within while the other had a live maggot.
She claimed that her brother even bit into a live maggot unknowingly.
A Second Facebook Post on 25 Jul 2018
On 25 July, Ms Ifaa Insyiirah posted another video on Facebook.
She claimed that the Agri-Food and Veterinary Authority of Singapore (AVA) called her and said they require more proof of her claims so that they can investigate Kellogg’s warehouse.
So she went out and got another packet of Kellogg’s K Special cereal.
And this time, she avoided the Vanilla Almond flavour.
She found moving insects within the bag as well as what looked like a spider web.
Kellogg’s: It’s the weakened packaging seal that’s causing the problems
AVA, after preliminary investigations, said that the cause of insects infestations in Kellogg’s Special K cereal was due to “a weakened packaging seal”.
It was found that the seal may open when mishandled during distribution along the supply chain.
The spokesperson for Kellogg’s assured consumers that only “a small number” of cereal bag seals were weakened and that the company has taken corrective measures.
“Our food now has newly improved cereal bags… there are no affected products on the shelf,” she said.
The spokesperson, however, failed to elaborate on how many affected boxes there are, as well as the location and time of sale of these boxes.
But here’s a reference anyway to check if your cereal belongs to the same batch as Ms Ifaa’s.
Nonetheless, the spokesperson assured the media that at Kellogg’s, their number one priority is the quality of their food.
This isn’t the first time Kellogg’s product quality was called into question
In June 2018, the company had to issue a worldwide recall for its Honey Smacks cereal. It was suspected that the product might have salmonella bacteria.
The United States Food and Drug Administration (US FDA) said the product was linked to more than 60 illnesses in the US.
No other Kellogg products were affected during that incident.
Moral of the lesson here: look carefully before eating
Because no matter how safe Singapore is, something’s bound to get through.
Especially cereal, which you’d usually eat in the morning when you’re half asleep. If you’re not careful enough, you might just get extra protein in your breakfast.
Share this with anyone who has bought Kellogg’s special K cereal recently.
Better be safe than sorry mah, no?
