The COVID-19 outbreak might’ve brought out a number of unsung heroes, but it has also drawn out the worst of humanity. Singapore, to be exact.
As the COVID-19 looms upon humanity, Singaporeans have prioritised their own innate needs ahead of the bigger picture.
Yet, notwithstanding the aforementioned ‘kiasu’ and ‘kiasi’ acts that have drawn the ire of more level-headed people, one aspect has emerged to infuriate the country like no other:
The ill-treatment and complete disrespect towards our nation’s nurses.
Nurses are the unsung heroes/heroines who protect Singapore’s healthcare interests on the front line. They’re brave in all of their valiance, having to contend with the risk of contracting some unfathomable pathogen at work.
They’re hardworking to a fault, having become accustomed to endless work hours and insufficient rest. They do not expect gratitude; they toil day and night for a cause, and are content as long as the hospital’s kept safe and sound.
And yet, Singaporeans have let their fear of COVID-19 get to their heads. Nurses have been berated for being on public transport; to some citizens, they should be considerate and avoid “passing germs” to others. While some were still reasonably polite, others have not been so kind with their words, throwing out adjectives and nouns that have reduced our unsung heroes to tears. Truly, it’s a glimpse into humanity’s darkest side.
But it’s not the end for our dear maligned nurses. As reports of mistreatment increase, so too have reports of appreciation for them. And lest you’re wondering, this article’s one of the latter;
And constitutes a child’s genuine gratitude, no less.
Kids Gave Handwritten & Drawings to Medical Workers To Thank Them For Their Service
According to Stomp, students from PCF Sparkletots Preschool at Jurong Spring took a little detour from their usual Valentine’s Day itinerary, instead opting to gift staff at a Jurong West clinic with heartfelt cards of appreciation.
Stomper Drew, whose wife works at the clinic, has shared several heartwarming photos with Stomp. According to him, his wife was “incredibly touched” by the kind gesture.
“They were appreciated and received little handmade appreciation cards drawn by children,” he said.
Who won’t?
“Kudos to the teachers!
“Little things like this make jobs in the healthcare industry worthwhile during this difficult period.”
Drew added that MP Desmond Lee of GRC has also paid a visit to the clinic, giving out masks and Redoxon, a supplement for immunity.
“Mr Lee was handing out masks and essentials to clinics in Jurong West that day and gave thanks to the clinic’s doctors and staff who are front-liners as well,” he said.
“He also reached out to cleaners in the market, to thank them for their efforts.”
To end off, Drew expressed his gratitude towards our healthcare workers.
“I’m just glad that all these people are being recognised for their efforts and courage.
“Not just them, but there are many who are being ostracised for doing their job tirelessly just so everyone else can still carry on with our normal daily routines and lives.”
Well-said, Drew. Well-said.
Our nurses might’ve had to contend with unnecessary stress and hurt, but I’m glad to see that in the end, the positivism still outweighs the negativity.
And so, to all the healthcare workers working on the front lines, keep striving on! And remember;
We’ll always have your back. 🙂
