Kind Cab Driver Lent Passenger Who Forgot His Wallet $5 To Get Dinner For His Wife

The taxi industry has been suffering lately. In fact, the taxi population has fallen every year since 2014.

Can you guess what happened in 2014? One word: competition. No points for guessing who from.

To put it out there, I’m a fan of them taxis.

I like how the ubiquitous blue and yellow cars with their toplights make up a familiar scene on the roads of Singapore.

I like standing by the roadside and staring longingly at all the HIRED signs in their festive red LED lights, wishing I could be a part of their world.

However, not everyone has a good impression of taxi drivers, especially those who intentionally used “Change Shift” as an excuse not to pick you up.

But say what you will about taxi drivers, there are some cab drivers who are actually nicer than you think they’ll ever be.

Like this man we’re going to talk about.

What Happened

In case you didn’t want to read the Facebook post for yourself, here’s the situation explained by me, who just read the Facebook post for myself.

The Premise

The customer, Esmonde Tjw, in a thoughtful gesture bought dinner for his pregnant wife. But all was not well when they found what looked like pubic hair in the food. To appease his understandably upset wife, the ever gallant Tjw rushed out to get more food.

Climax 1

In his hurry, he managed to flag down a cab before realising that he made the most irritating and unforgivable blunder of not taking his wallet with him.

Not wanting to keep the missus waiting, he simply explained his wallet-less state to the driver, who agreed to get him to his destination anyway.

As he denoted in his post, this is already a notable display of empathy and trust.

Climax 2

At the eatery, this man continued to push his luck. He recognised (probably belatedly) that he can’t get food without money. He didn’t have money, but the driver did, so our protagonist asked to borrow $5 from him.

Now the driver has his limits, and this was hovering over the line, especially because this blundering passenger of his might very well be a shrewd conman. He voiced this out but Tjw apologised and pleaded. In the end, the driver gave in after holding his phone as collateral.

Resolution

When that was all done, the driver got his passenger back to his house. Tjw paid all he owed and tipped the driver as well for his role in the quest to cheer up his wife.

Out of sheer appreciation, he also shared the driver’s license plate (SHA 8207), so that all of us can keep our eyes peeled for such taxi so we can shake the man’s hand (or borrow $5 from him).

Crises Averted

The man might have had to spend more time getting his wallet.

His wife might have been more pissed.

The driver might have been scammed of time, gas and $5.

But none of it happened because everyone was sincere and understanding. So cheers all around.
