South Korean singer-actress Sulli, whose real name is Choi Jin-ri, was found dead in her house today at 3.21pm local time (Singapore time at 2:21pm today).
The 25-year-old, who was a child actress, officially debuted in 2009 at the age of 15 as a member of South Korean girl group f(x). She left the group six years later to focus on her acting career, but resumed her music career from 2018.
According to the Seongnam Sujeong Police Station, Sulli was found dead by her manager this afternoon in her house. The manager has tried to contact her and couldn’t reach her, and therefore reportedly visit her house.
The police also added that she has been suffering from severe depression, though her family and manager have yet to confirmed that.
Allegedly Killed Herself by Hanging
The police report also allegedly claimed that the she had died after hanging herself in her house from the second floor.
So far, there has been no statement from her agent, SM Entertainment, and her family.
Trainee Since Young
Sulli entered the entertainment industry through the SM audition casting system when she was mere 10 years old, and started training with SM Entertainment as a trainee since then. Five years later, the group f(x) was formed.
In 2014, when she was still in f(x), she suddenly went on hiatus for a full year as she was exhausted from the continuous, malicious comments and false rumors that had been spread about her. As mentioned earlier, she didn’t go back to singing and switched to acting instead.
That was the only public indication of her struggle in the industry.
Celebrity Suicides Are Too Common
It wasn’t just too long ago that a Korean star had committed suicide.
In late June this year, Jeon Mi-seon, a veteran Korean actress, was reportedly suffering from depression and was found dead in her hotel room.
In May, K-pop star Goo Hara reportedly attempted to kill herself in her house due to depression, but was found by her manager and has since recovered.
South Korea has the highest suicide rate among all OECD countries since 2003, with an average of a person committing suicide every 40 seconds.
