3 Women, 2 S’poreans & 1 PR, Die in Johor After Their Car Collides Head-On With Lorry

On 28 August 2023, two Singaporean women and one Singaporean PR were killed in a traffic accident in Johor.

According to the Kota Tinggi police officer Hussin Zamora, the accident happened when the vehicle the women were travelling in tried to overtake a lorry.

According to the Malaysian police, the trio were travelling in a Singapore-registered Honda Freed multi-purpose vehicle (MPV).

They were on the way to Bandar Tenggara, a town in Kota Tinggi, from Kluang.

The vehicle had tried to overtake a lorry travelling in front of them.

However, while doing so, the driver was unable to avoid a roll-on/roll-off lorry travelling in the opposite direction.

The two vehicles collided head-on, leading to a tragic accident.

Car Roof Torn Open

According to Bandar Tenggara fire station operations commander Senior Fire Officer II Mohd Norul Fazudin Shafie, firemen were dispatched to the scene immediately upon receiving the report at 1.52pm.

A total of six members, together with a Fire Tender Rescue vehicle, were dispatched.

Upon arrival on the scene, the MPV was found wrecked with its roof torn open.

The three female passengers were declared dead at the scene.

After the victims’ families identified the bodies of their loved ones, they will be released to their families as quickly as possible, Mr Hussin said.

The drivers of both the Honda Freed MPV, a 59-year-old Singaporean, and the lorry, a 49-year-old male, survived.

They were sent to different hospitals for medical treatment.

The entire operation ended at about 2.53pm, Mr Hussin added.

Victims’ Families Contacted, Assistance Being Rendered

According to the spokesperson for the Singapore’s Consulate-General in Johor Bahru, the victims’ families has been informed about the fatal accident.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MFA) said it has been giving consular assistance and support to the families of the Singaporeans involved through the Singapore Consulate-General in JB.

The MFA sends its deepest condolences to the bereaved families.

Fatal Accidents in Johor

Earlier this year in June, a 22-year-old Singaporean died in a traffic accident in Johor.

He had lost control of his rental motorcycle and was flung off a highway flyover while riding along the Eastern Dispersal Link highway towards the land checkpoint in Johor Bahru.

According to the towing company’s founder, the 22-year-old had only gotten his license a month ago.

He may have gotten into the accident due to his unfamiliarity with the highway.

The highway, which the 22-year-old fell off after hitting the stone wall of the flyover, requires drivers and cyclists to make a sharp turn.
