You may have heard of the emerging COVID-19 cluster from a group of KTV lounges that have been reformed as F&B outlets.

The Ministry of Manpower (MOH) had announced on 12 July that it was investigating COVID-19 infections among Vietnamese social hostesses.

The ministry also made free swab tests available for individuals who went to three KTV places that had been visited by COVID-19 cases while still infectious.

Recently, one of the KTV lounges has stated that the social hostess who visited the place was not a staff member but was instead a customer.

Here’s what happened.

According to Mr Li, a manager at Supreme KTV located at Far East Shopping Centre, he did not know that there had been a social hostess among his customers.

He said that he only found out about it when MOH informed the lounge that there had been a confirmed COVID-19 case there.

Speaking to Lianhe Zaobao, he said, “For us, having customers is already a very good thing. Why would we go out of our way to check on their identities?”

Mr Li also pointed out that social hostesses often frequent many locations, so whether they were infected at Supreme KTV itself is not clear.

He shared that business has declined to around 30% of what it used to be before the onslaught of COVID-19.

Mr Li said that Supreme KTV had to turn into an F&B establishment due to COVID-19 restrictions, similar to Teo Heng converting its rooms into studying, working, chilling or even livestreaming spaces available for rent

Mr Li said that all staff have undergone COVID-19 testing and have been quarantined since the release of the news.

In addition, the KTV lounge will stay closed for an indefinite period of time while it undergoes cleaning and disinfection.

Mr Li also shared his concerns about the presence of COVID-19 cases in KTV lounges, saying that he is afraid that the efforts undertaken in the past year will all be for naught.

He added that nightclubs have done their best to abide by safe management regulations in light of the pandemic.
