We thought Old Chang Kee has won the patriotic game with their durian curry puff.
I mean, having that sounds practically like munching on apple while having a cup of kopi-o kosong: sounds like hell, but taste (maybe) like heaven.
But no, we were wrong. Another F&B outlet has upped the ante, and it’s nothing to do with some gold thingy, some funny burger or some thorny everything.
It’s laska.
And not just any laksa. It’s laksa. Cheese. Fries.
Yeah, you’ve read it right. Laksa Cheese Fries.
The Beast is a bar cum restaurant at Jalan Klapa, along Victoria Street. Opened in 2013, they promise a taste of the “America South” – yippe, because the US is so big, the food is slightly different based on region. Heck, even the accent is different, but that’s for another article.
The bar is also famous for its chicken and waffles that’s at $20, and of course its Southern Big Breakfast (nothing to do with the one in McDonald’s) that’s packed to the fullness at $22, mainly for the weekend brunch when you’ve hangover from the previous night drink at, perhaps, the same bar.
And by now, with that wall of text, you’d have noticed that it’s not exactly a place with local fares.
But that’s about to change with its new addition. New additions, I mean.
National Day Dishes, Because National Day
As National Day approaches, The Beast will once again be dishing out Southern dishes with a local twist.
First up is its Nasi Lemak Burger, which they had last year as well. Known as The Beast Nasi Lemak Burger, the $22 burger looks really like one for The Beast in X-Men: it’s made of a succulent Southern fried chicken smothered with house-made sambal, runny fried egg, crispy luncheon meat fries, sandwiched between two fragrant deep-fried coconut rice “buns” infused with 100% natural blue pea flower.
Luncheon meat fries? Okay, win liao. Anything with luncheon is a winner, right?
But not quite yet. Because the star of the show is…
Laksa Cheese Fries
Can’t tell what it is? Well, it’s shoestring fries topped with laksa gravy, runny egg, oozy mozzarella with fried tau pok strips.
Laksa. On fries. With cheese. And Egg.
The unique dish comes with a…unique price, too. At $14, it’s not the cheapest fries around, but hey: laksa with fries. The idea itself is already worth $13.90, no?
(Though I think a Nasi Lemak fries would really nail it – if someone does that, please credit me)
These items would be available in the whole month of August, so if you’re in the mood for some east+west food, here’s where you should be next month:
