Not all superheroes wear underwear on the outside of their pants, or live in a dark cave with bats and a seemingly immortal butler.
Some of them are just like you and me: everyday, ordinary folk.
But when the situation calls for it, these individuals will rise to the occasion and save the day.
Or, in this instance, a lamppost.
13 People Held Up Lamppost to Stop it From Falling
If you recall, there was more rainfall last December than tears shed by YouTubers in apology videos last year, which is saying something.
The heavy rains coupled with strong winds not only made for a particularly unpleasant picnic, but caused mini landslides and potholes as well.
It also nearly caused a lamppost to fall to the ground, if not for the intervention of some helpful bystanders.
On 12 Dec, 2020, a 38-year-old man, his wife, and two other women were taking a photo after having dinner at D’Hotel, located at 231 Outram Rd.
The group happened to be standing under a lamppost at an open-air carpark near the hotel.
They then heard a clicking sound from the lamppost, and saw it tilting.
Incredulous, the man asked the women to verify the sight.
They too realised that the lamppost was falling. The four of them then rushed to the tilting lamppost and quickly held it up.
10 minutes later, a family of 5 who was walking to their car saw the group struggling with the lamppost and helped them prop the large structure up.
It reportedly stood 15m tall and weighed several hundred kilograms.
One of them then rushed to a restaurant to look for help while the others informed the authorities.
Lamppost Eventually Brought Down Safely
When police officers arrived on the scene, they too joined the group in holding up the lamppost
According to Shin Min Daily News, people in the group took turns to rest, as it was physically taxing to hold up the post for such a long time. They also gave each other words of encouragement.
Later in the night, at around 10pm, officers from the Land Transport Authority arrived with a truck-mounted crane.
Fortunately for the helpful bystanders’ triceps, the lamppost was subsequently brought down safely by the authorities.
Group Receives SPF Award
On Tuesday (23 Feb), the 13 people who helped prop up the lamppost received awards from the Singapore Police Force for their “public spiritedness”.
“The Police would like to commend all recipients for their public-spirited acts and will inspire others to step forward to keep our neighbourhood safe,” SPF said.
Moral of the story: not all heroes wear capes. But even if these 13 don’t, they’ve certainly lit a spark of inspiration in all of us.
