Cycling is a sport that many of us love to partake in, to keep fit. However, this sport is only fun for everyone if they abide by all the rules in Singapore, especially the traffic rules.
It seemed that this group of cyclists missed the memo for they were captured breaking multiple rules together.
As Chandler Bing said, “If I’m going down, I’m taking everybody with me,” right?
Large Group of Cyclists Allegedly Photographed in a Large Group at Woodlands Road
On Saturday (19 Jun) morning, at around 9am, a large group of cyclists were photographed along Woodlands road, waiting for the traffic light to turn green.
A group of over 10 cyclists were spotted interacting with each other in close proximity. Some of them seemed to be consuming food while others were smiling widely at each other. And how do we know that?
Because they were not wearing masks either.
According to the Singapore Cycling Federation, cyclists are allowed to cycle in groups of 5 to aid in contact tracing.
A physical distance of 2m between individuals must be maintained while cycling, and 3m between different groups must be maintained at all times.
No intermingling between groups is allowed, too. This rule is applicable before, during and after the cycling activity.
They also advise cyclist to avoid cycling in areas with high human and traffic density.
Netizens Are Not Happy
With the recent spur of accidents involving bicycles, netizens are quick to jump into the comments section to share their thoughts.
One commented on their bright smiles and ignorance.
While others sarcastically deemed drivers to be inferior as compared to the cyclists.
This kinder netizen just wanted the cyclists to be more aware of their surroundings.
Jokes aside, the real question is why is everyone so agitated about a group of cyclists on the road? There are two reasons:
- Fluctuating number of COVID-19 cases
- Rising number of traffic accidents involving cyclists
Fluctuating number of COVID-19 cases
Recently, the number of COVID-19 cases has been fluctuating daily, leaving us on edge of our seats as we wonder will Singapore ever fully reopened, or withdraw back into Circuit Breaker 2.0.
In order for the cases to decline on our little red dot, we have to do our part in maintaining a safe distance between everyone and adhere to the given guidelines during these tremulous times.
That means cyclists who want to cycle with their friends and family would have to keep to a group of 5 and maintain a physical distance of 2m between individuals.
If they have more than 5 people, they can split off into multiple groups but the groups should not intermingle. There should at least be a safe distance of 3m between different groups.
Rising number of traffic accidents involving cyclists
According to the Traffic Police, in 2020, there were over 572 traffic accidents involving cyclists as compared to the 459 accidents in 2019. That is a 25% increase.
And remember: in 2020, traffic should be better since more people were working at home.
With the rising number of cyclists breaking the traffic rules lately, it’s no doubt that the statics will leap upwards once again.
