Fried Chickens are all the rage right now. But Japanese Fried Chicken? Well, that’s one of the firsts in Singapore.

From 13th July till while stocks last, KFC will be introducing their latest fried chicken creation – the Umakara Chicken – a medley of Umami and Karai flavours (we still couldn’t decide which was stronger) which garnered a resounding thumbs up from us – and mind you, we are mostly picky eaters but we would spend our calories in these any day.

So yes, what’s Umami then? Well, we are all familiar with the four main profiles of taste – sweet, sour, salty and bitter, but it wasn’t until recently that it was discovered there was a fifth profile which resembled the taste of being “slightly more savoury”, which falls slightly behind “salty”.

Therefore, this fifth profile was coined as umami, which was also a commonly used Japanese word – an element that can be found in most Japanese dishes!

Fried to a gorgeous brown, the Umakara chicken had a shattering crisp when we first bit into the spicy batter which was immensely satisfying.

The shoyu-marinated fried chicken was evenly coated with umami spice sprinkles, and though there was a kick of heat that came along with every bite, it was still very bearable – something that made it so addictive at the same time. Just two words for it – damn shiok!

At S$7.90, the meal comes with 2 pieces of Umakara Chicken, 1 regular Whipped Potato, 1 regular Coleslaw and 1 regular SJORA Mango Peach.

For those who are looking for something more substantial, you can also order the Umakara Chicken Box which features 2 pieces of Umakara Chicken, 2 crispy Chicken Tenders, 2 pieces Shroom Peppers (golden potato bites stuffed with finely chopped mushrooms, mixed vegetables, meatloaf and onion), 1 regular Whipped Potato and 1 regular SJORA Mango Peach for only S$9.50 – quite worth the price paid, I must say!

The Umakara Chicken will be released from 13th July onwards, so mark your calendars if you are keen on trying out this amazing creation! You can also hashtag #UmakaraKFC to share which taste profile you feel is stronger – Umami or Karai!
