Everything About the Death of the Lift Technician That is Known So Far

Two weeks ago, a horror car crash took place in Tanjong Pagar, claiming five lives and injuring one.

Now, yet another fatal accident has happened not too far away.

Lift Technician Dies While Carrying Out Repair Works

A 29-year-old lift technician died on Saturday (Feb 27) while carrying out repair works at a building in North Bridge Road.

The accident occurred at 450 North Bridge Road, according to CNA.

The Bangladeshi national was conducting repair work on the top of the lift carriage when it suddenly ascended, trapping the man.

The Singapore Civil Defence Force (SCDF) and the police said they were alerted to the accident at about 11.30am.

When they arrived, the man was found trapped in a narrow gap between a lift carriage that was between the second and third storey of the building and the lift’s guide rail structure.
SCDF said that extricating the man from the narrow gap was a “highly complex and delicate” operation.
It required SCDF’s Disaster Assistance and Rescue Team (DART) and fire station personnel to operate rescue equipment within the confined space of the lift shaft.
An emergency medical team from Tan Tock Seng Hospital (TTSH) also arrived on the scene to provide assistance.
Sadly, despite the authorities’ best efforts, the man was pronounced dead at the scene at about 5.30pm by the TTSH team.
The case has been classed as an unnatural death. Police and MOM investigations are ongoing.

All Lift Maintenance Works at Site Halted

The Ministry of Manpower (MOM) said the occupier is Parkland Property Services, and the employer is Decor Engineering.

MOM has since ordered all lift maintenance works at the site to stop.

The building owner, Chan Brothers, said it was only notified of the incident at about 1pm, when the rescue operation was in progress.

The company’s directors arrived at the accident site soon after.

“Chan Brothers Group of Companies would like to express our deepest condolences to the family of the deceased for the loss of a loved one,” it said.

February Deadliest Month Since 2018

According to The Straits Times, February is the deadliest month since 2018 with regard to workplace accidents.

The lift technician’s death was the 11th work-related fatality this month, more than one-third of the 30 workplace deaths reported in the whole of last year.

Just a few days ago, an explosion at an industrial building in Tuas killed three men and left five in critical condition.

An inquiry committee has been convened to look into the fatal accident.
