Singapore’s famous badminton player, Loh Kean Yew, unveiled great news to us yesterday.
No, he didn’t win the Olympic Gold, though he gave it his all in the event. On Instagram, he revealed that he was a father to a baby boy!
Loh Kean Yew Meets His New Baby Born 2 Weeks Ago
In the 7 August post, he showed photos of himself hugging his new child, writing in the caption, “Finally coming home to my medal.”
Loh thanked others for supporting his wife during her pregnancy, as Loh was away focusing on his badminton tournaments.
Channel NewsAsia (CNA) reported that Loh’s wife had in fact given birth about two weeks ago when Loh was hard at work training in Denmark.
“We had already planned for this,” Loh said, knowing that he would miss the birth of his son.
He admitted feeling some guilt about it, but the joy of having a baby boy was too much.
It gave him extra motivation at the Paris Olympics, as he was playing for his new son too.
Loh became the first Singaporean to reach the men’s singles quarter-finals in 20 years, achieved last in 2004 by Ronald Susilo.
Unfortunately, he lost there in a match with Viktor Axelsen of Denmark, defending champion and world number two. Axelsen went on to clinch the gold medal once more.
Nonetheless, Singaporeans applauded Loh’s strong effort and good showing against elite competition.
And when he returned home, he got to hold Baby Loh for the first time. He even bought three Paris Olympics shirts, a family set for him, his wife, and their baby.
They had more creases and wrinkles than a 100-year-old person, leading Loh to add that he should add ironing to his daddy duties.
Viktor Axelsen Gives Congratulations to Loh
The Instagram announcement achieved much attention and netizens showered Loh with love.
His friend and rival Viktor Axelsen commented, congratulating Loh and joking that he couldn’t wait to see the child’s “massive baby calves.”
Loh replied, saying he would train his son’s calves “to be bigger than mine.”
Hong Kong’s badminton player Angus Ng Ka Long also sent in his best wishes, amongst many other athletes in the sport.
Credit must be given to Loh’s wife as well, for being supportive of Loh being overseas competing while she dealt with the late stages of pregnancy and childbirth.
Thankfully she had support from other family members during the time.
The two had gotten engaged in December of 2022.
Now with the Olympics over, Loh has the equally tough task of fatherhood ahead of him. He’ll be aiming for the gold medal for sure.
