Everything About the Loyang Ave Fatal Accident that Involved a SBS Transit Bus Driver and Cyclist

Tragedy. A tag that often comes associated with novella.

And alas, a notion that seems to be equally unforgiving in real life.

On 19 March, misfortune befell a cyclist who was riding along Loyang Avenue:

In a terrible twist of fate, he found himself trapped under a bus whose driver did not latch on to the fact for some 30m.

According to several reports, the accident occurred along Loyang Avenue at Pasir Ris Drive 1, at around 10:30 p.m.

A SBS bus had collided with a cyclist near a T-Junction, trapping him underneath in the process.

31-year-old German Gonzales was said to have been lugged for about 30m.

He was eventually retrieved with the use of lifting equipment, but the damage proved irreparable.

Mr Gonzales was pronounced dead on the spot.

According to a news report, a bicycle was spotted under the right-front wheel of the bus. A pair of slippers could also be seen on the road.

Self-professed witnesses at the scene also alleged that nearby vehicles were honking at the bus when the accident occurred. Apparently, the driver had not been aware at the time of collision.

The bus driver, 63, has since been taken into custody for careless driving causing death.

Daily Calls Now A Memoir Of The Past

According to Lianhe Wanbao, the deceased’s wife and children, who are based in the Phillippines, have been left reeling from the shock of the sudden loss.

“I didn’t think that his life would end just like that,” said Ms Shiela Marie, 29.

“My heart really hurts, and I don’t know what to do.”

Meanwhile, the couple’s two sons are said to have been inconsolable since learning of their father’s demise.

Since the accident, Ms Marie has been dedicating condolence messages to her deceased husband on social media site Facebook.

In one post, she wrote her hope that they will, one day, be able to travel together again.

“Let us travel again, I will still be by your side. I hope this is all just a dream,” she said.

Response

SBS Transit senior vice-president of corporate communications Tammy Tan has since responded to the news.

“We are sorry that this has happened. The bus was travelling straight and about to make a right turn at the traffic junction which was green in its favour when the accident occurred.

“We are trying to get in touch with the cyclist’s next-of-kin to extend our deepest condolences and offer our assistance.”

SBS Transit is currently assisting police investigations.
