LTA Resurfacing The Coating for a Segment of PIE Where Several Cars Have Reportedly Lost Control

If you drive in Singapore, you’d know that almost every motorist drives as if they’re rushing to the hospital with their pregnant wife who’s five seconds away from giving birth.

Even though most of them are simply returning home from work or going out for a meal, speeding seems to be the norm for most motorists in the country.

Aside from being incredibly annoying to other motorists, it can also be dangerous and lead to accidents.

But there’s one road in particular that seems to be accident-prone, and it’s so bad that it’s caught the attention of the authorities.

LTA Resurfacing The Coating for a Segment of PIE Where Several Cars Have Reportedly Lost Control

A segment of the Pan Island Expressway (PIE) at Jalan Anak Bukit will be broadened and resurfaced due to a recent spate of accidents along the area, said the Land Transport Authority (LTA) in a statement on Saturday (22 Aug).

In a Facebook post, the LTA explained that several accidents have occurred at the site due to speeding, after conducting a study on the stretch of highway.

In its post, LTA shared a video from SG Road Vigilante that showed several cars driving along the segment of road in question and skidding out of control.

In the video, which compiled four separate incidents from 13 to 18 Aug, cars on the rightmost lane can be seen skidding out of control as they approach a slight bend.

In the first incident, a black car slides out of control and smashes into the parapet at the side of the road, causing it to spin 180 degrees before coming to a halt.

In the second incident, a white car on the rightmost lane veers suddenly to its left and scarily cuts across the expressway before coming to a stop along the road shoulder.

The driver must be thanking his lucky stars that there were no vehicles to his left at that precise moment.

A white truck was the victim in the third incident, where it slams into the parapet after passing the bend.

The fourth accident was perhaps the most alarming of the lot, as a car speeding along the rightmost lane skids suddenly and cuts across the other lanes at a high speed, slams into the road barrier at the other end, and spins 360 degrees before coming to a stop.

Accidents Due to Speeding

Surprisingly, LTA said it carried out skid resistance readings for this segment and found they are within the normal range, which means these accidents were due to speeding.

Still, the authority plans to add several road features to improve safety for motorists. These include:

  • broadening lane markings
  • re-painting the parapet wall with directional arrows
  • installing new signs along the road segment

LTA said it would also bring forward its plans to re-surface the coating for this section of the PIE, including the road shoulder, with works expected to begin next week.

“Meanwhile, we would like to remind motorists to exercise greater caution when driving in rainy conditions and avoid speeding,” LTA said.

Singaporean motorists seemed to be trained in the art of speeding, but while it might get us from one location to another in a slightly shorter amount of time, you could not only hurt yourself in the process, but injure motorists and pedestrians around you.
