With Chinese New Year just round the corner, I’m sure many families are starting to decorate their house with auspicious elements.

Apart from the widely-seen “福” turned upside down to signify the arrival of blessings, what else do you normally see?

If you take a stroll in the market, you’ll see many people trying to sell plants, each symbolizing a different kind of blessing.

One of the most commonly seen household plant would be this:

The lucky bamboo.

According to the ancient art of Feng Shui, the ‘bamboo’ is filled with peaceful and wise energy.

It is one of the most highly sought-after plants during the festive period.

However, if you have cats and/or dogs at home, you should probably take note of this:

The lucky bamboo is not a bamboo.

It is commonly known as the Corn plant.

According to vetSTREET, Corn plant is toxic to dogs and cats.

Saponin (toxic chemical) can be found in this plant.

If eaten, the animals may show signs of vomiting (with or without blood), appetite loss, depression and /or increased salivation.

Affected cats may also have dilated pupils.

If you want to know more about it, the plant also go by other names such as Cornstalk plant, Ribbon plant, Dragon tree and Money tree.

There are several species and each contain unknown steroidal saponins.

Here are some examples of how the plant may look like:
