2 Malls to Have Odd-Even Weekend Entry Restrictions Due to Overcrowding; Other Malls Might Follow If They Are Overcrowded, Too

Remember the system for the four popular wet markets?

Based on the last digit of your identification card number, you can only go on odd or even dates.

So if your last digit ends with 1, 3, 5, 7 or 9, you can only enter on odd-number dates (e.g 21 Aug); if your last digit is 0, 2, 4, 6 or 8, you can only enter on even-number dates (e.g. 22 Aug).

Well, that system has been implemented at two popular malls in Singapore.

2 Malls to Have Odd-Even Weekend Entry Restrictions Due to Overcrowding

On 21 Aug 2020, Health Minister Gan Kim Yong announced at the press conference that visitors going to Lucky Plaza and Peninsula Plaza will be subjected to the system in place at the wet markets with a little alteration.

Based on the last digit of their NRIC or Foreign Identification Card number, they can only enter on odd or even dates on the weekends.

This system will start on 29 Aug 2020 (next Saturday) and more details will be unveiled by the Singapore Tourism Board (STB) and Enterprise Singapore (ESG).

Other Malls Might Follow If They Are Overcrowded

The reason why they’re introducing this system to the two malls is that they are overcrowded during the weekends.

It was added that the task force will monitor the situation, and if any other malls were to face the same problem of overcrowding, they will implement similar systems there as well.

Softer Music In F&B Outlets

Another observation made by the task force: loud background music in F&B outlets.

If the background music is too loud, it makes patrons speak up louder to be heard, which translates to more spittle in the air and a higher risk of Covid-19 transmission.

So they’re tightening the rules and F&B outlets can only play soft background music from now on.

Live broadcasts on TV and radio, as well as video screenings, are still not allowed.

Besides that, Mr Lawrence Wong also added that people are still making bookings for multiples tables for large gatherings, and urges restaurants not to take them.

“There should not be organised events and celebrations or parties in a F&B setting involving multiple tables… People in such gatherings tend to be mingling amongst themselves without their masks on, and there are risks of large clusters forming in such settings.”

Basically, don’t do things like this:

There is only 1 valid reason for a group of more than 5 to dine out: if they are all in the same family.

Enforcement officers will be doing more checks on F&B outlets, he warned.
