Before Twilight took the world by storm, there was an Asian version of it (minus the moppy scenes) which had everyone glued to their television screens.
Yes, the 1998 Hong Kong drama series titled My Date With A Vampire was a show which capitulated artists such as Kristy Yang and Joey Meng to fame.
The series, which was produced by Hong Kong broadcaster, ATV, was so popular back in the 90s that there was a trilogy.
The second and third instalments for My Date With A Vampire were released in 2000 and 2004 respectively.
A Show Which Made Joey Meng Famous
Back then, the show’s leads, Kuang Tian You (Eric Wan) and Ma Xiaoling (Joey Meng) were the power couple. Something akin to Zoe Tay and Li Nanxing in The Unbeatables.
Not forgetting the fact that Joey Meng’s character made short skirts popular all over again.
For those who can’t recall how Ma Xiaoling looked like in the series (and how short her skirts were), here are some pictures:
Joey Meng’s tall and lengthy frame made the costumes she wore looked good.
Fast forward to the year 2020, and here’s how the 171cm tall starlet looks like now:
Wait, has time come to standstill for her, or is she really a vampire after all?
Celebrating Her Lunar 50th Birthday
Recently, the lady who was every guy’s dream girlfriend in the 90s got noticed by the media again after she posted this:
今天是我农历生日,Happy Birthday to me~
Posted by 萬綺雯 Joey Meng on Sunday, 18 October 2020
She has just celebrated her lunar year’s 50th birthday but she didn’t look a year older.
The ageless beauty was seen wearing a gown and holding a glass of wine.
The birthday girl said in Cantonese, “Some people say 18 is a woman’s best age. That’s not right. I feel that the present is the best, regardless of age. A woman isn’t the most beautiful when she is young at 18, or when she is at a mature age of 30. It is when she is always full of confidence.”
And it appears to be repurposed from a Douyin (TikTok) video, so yes: everyone, including Ma Xiaoling, is on TikTok.
So how did she get started in this industry?
Clinched Second Prize in 1989’s Miss Asia Pageant
The starlet first gained exposure via a beauty contest.
According to Baidu, the confident starlet took part in 1989’s Miss Asia Pageant and clinched the second prize at the age of 19.
In the same year, she signed a contract with ATV and began her artiste journey.
Some of the shows she starred included, I Have A Date With Spring in 1996.
Her breakout series, My Date With A Vampire won her the Best Actress Award in 1998’s ATV’s awards.
After that, she continued to act for ATV until 2012 when she went to TVB. She then worked on a project-based basis for TVB since then.
