The footballing world was rocked on Wednesday (25 Nov) by the news that legend Diego Maradona had passed away at the age of 60.
Just weeks after undergoing successful brain surgery, the Argentinian suffered a heart attack in his home in the outskirts of Buenos Aires.
Tributes poured in from all over the globe as fans mourned the death of a footballing great.
Some tributes, strangely, also poured in for Madonna, the 62-year-old singer-songwriter.
But it seems that the latter is still very much alive.
RIP Messages for Madonna Trended Online Because People Mistook Her For Diego Maradona
Rumours of Madonna’s demise have been greatly exaggerated, and by that I mean they’re completely false.
It seems that when some netizens came across articles and tweets mourning Maradona, they mistook him for Madonna.
Not because of how they look of course; they are as different as bananas and iPhones.
Rather, as you probably guessed, the names Maradona and Madonna look almost identical, with the exception of an “r” and extra “n”.
Whether this was an accident or fabricated on purpose, no one knows.
Misspellings like this certainly didn’t help.

Nevertheless, it wasn’t long before Madonna memes found their way to the internet.

Social media was filled with tributes for the singer, until some users pointed out that it was actually the football star that had died.
A Huge Loss for Football
Sadly, news that Maradona has passed away is indeed true.
In the first week of November, the 60-year-old had subdural hematoma surgery for a blood clot on his brain, which was successful.
He was kept in the hospital longer because he exhibited symptoms of alcohol withdrawal, but was eventually discharged.
Sadly, just a few weeks later, Maradona suffered a heart attack at his home in the outskirts of Buenos Aires, and passed away.
Residents in Buenos Aires took to the streets in mourning as social media saw an outpouring of tributes for the footballing legend.
Troubles off the Pitch
While he was worshipped for his skills on the pitch, Maradona was often criticised for his antics off it.
Known for his temper and confrontational behaviour, he once fired a compressed-air rifle at reporters who he claimed were invading his privacy, and received a suspended jail sentence as a result.
He also suffered from a 20-year cocaine addiction, which he struggled to shake.
Already prone to obesity, his poor diet, hard-partying lifestyle, and use of drugs further impacted his health.
Despite his off-the-field antics, the Argentinian will always be remembered as one of the greatest footballers of all time.
