For Mahathir Mohamad, the longest serving Prime Minister of Malaysia, the past three months have been filled with health scares, for himself, his family, and the nation.

The first instance was on 16 December 2021 where he was admitted into the International Heart Institute (IJN) for a full diagnosis and further observation.

Less than a month afterwards, the 96-year-old man returned to IJN for an elective procedure that was not disclosed to the public.

Things seemed to be looking up, but on 22 January 2022, Mahathir was admitted into the medical institution once more, and it seemed serious this time around.

On the Path of Recovery

Regardless of the rumours floating around about Mahathir’s untimely demise or his critical condition, the tenacious former Prime Minister pulled through in the end.

From being bed-bound, he was able to be discharged from the hospital and rest at home, even if his daily routine included having to travel back and forth from the hospital to undergo physiotherapy and other treatments at IJN.

On 4 February, he even went on Twitter to express his thanks for the flowers and well-wishes, similarly hoping that he can make a full recovery as well.

Mahathir Sighted Taking a Lakeside Stroll

Just yesterday (9 Feb), Mahathir was seen strolling by the lake in the capital of Putrajaya, unaided and with a better complexion, whilst an entourage surrounded him.

His wife Sit Hasmah Mohd Ali was also by his side.

In his latest Twitter video, the politician said: “I have recovered from an illness that, for me, was very severe. I did not expect to recover, but thank God, with the treatment given by the National Heart Institute (IJN), I recovered.

“Now I can walk, I can eat, I can sleep, I can sit, I am almost back to normal, but I’m not that strong. I still can’t do any work yet, but I hope I can get better.”

Political Obligations Impeded

It has only been five days since Mahathir was discharged from the hospital.

Understanding that he was limited by his own health condition, he posted a letter on Facebook on the day of his discharge (5 Feb), expressing his regret for not being able to join the members of his Parti Pejuang Tuah Air in the upcoming Johor state election.

The road to full recovery is still long, and he requires more medical treatment from the hospital.

“For me, the struggle for my country will never end, just like religious obligations. For me, the struggle is also a religious obligation and a trust that we have to carry for as long as we live,” he declared.

If anything, his statement is an oath that he will recover no matter the odds and continue participating in the political arena.

He has yet to relinquish his role as the leader of his opposition party, and is still serving as the MP for the Langkawi constituency in Kedah.

History of Heart Problems

Although his recent condition has not been disclosed, it is a known fact that Mahathir has been plagued with heart troubles in the past.

In the later years of his life, he suffered three heart attacks: the first in 1989, and two in 2006. He had to go for a bypass surgery at Kuala Lumpur in 1989, and another at IJN in 2007.

Besides that, he had a chest infection in 2018 which had been treated in IJN as well.
