A 31-year-old Filipino maid was sentenced to nine months in jail after pleading guilty to theft as a servant and obstructing justice in the National Court on 10 Apr 2025.
Doniego Fleiry Ann Ramos admitted to stealing over $26,000 worth of jewelry and cash from her employer, then staging a break-in scene to cover up her crime.
Filipino Maid’s Elaborate Theft and Cover-up Scheme
On 28 Mar 2024, Ramos was tasked to clean her employer’s brother’s home. After completing this duty, she returned to her employer’s residence around 5pm, where she found the door unlocked and nobody home.

Taking advantage of the situation, Ramos stole multiple valuable items including 12 rings, several necklaces, bracelets, pendants, and limited edition Singapore banknotes.
The total value of the stolen goods amounted to approximately $26,604.
To disguise her theft as a break-in, Ramos scattered jewelry boxes on the floor and hid $700 of her own money to create the impression that she too had been robbed.
According to Shin Min Daily News, at about 6pm, she called her 74-year-old employer, Zheng Shuqiong (transliterated from Mandarin), claiming she had returned home but forgot her keys.
Zheng instructed Ramos to return to her brother’s house where she would meet her, and they would go home together.
Police Investigation Reveals Deception
When Zheng and Ramos arrived home around 9pm, they discovered the staged break-in scene. Zheng immediately reported a home invasion to the police.
Upon questioning by officers, Ramos maintained her fabricated story that someone had broken into the house and stolen both her employer’s possessions and her own belongings.
She repeated this lie in her initial statement to investigating officers on 12 Apr 2024.

However, when pressed during a second interview, Ramos finally admitted to her actions. She then accompanied police officers to reveal where she had hidden the stolen items.
Police subsequently seized the stolen goods and arrested Ramos on 12 Mar 2025.
Under Singapore law, those who steal from an employer while serving as a clerk or servant can face jail terms of up to seven years plus fines.
Similarly, offenders who intentionally obstruct justice can receive jail sentences of up to seven years and be fined.
